INITIAL FACTS/IDEAS Sentinels are being put since April 2014 progresivelly in orbit. Copernicus operational data started to flow down to the different users. Copernicus core services are running operational products delivered.

Data access and in-situ data distribution with increasing functionality and performance. Value adding industry ready to uptake the data and products and develop commercial business. Continuous effort to foster the user into utilization of Copernicus data and information. ESA and EC assessing gaps at user side and evolve the Copernicus infrastructure and services. Support R&D to develop future enabling technologies: infrastructure/services. WIDENING THE USE OF COPERNICUS DATA AND INFORMATION

INITIAL FACTS/IDEAS Ackowledge that there are efforts to foster the utilisation of Copernicus data. Furthermore:

Expand the utilization of Copernicus data will come ‘mostly’ from the value added industry: important to asses needs across the full chain & foster the development of such kind of industry. Many users of the Copernicus core service are institutional: Copernicus is to support the implementation of EU policies. Policies shall progressively include explicitly the utilisation of Copernicus data and services.

EU and National institutions are aware of the utilization of EO data, still potential and therefore efforts needed to address local authorities.

INITIAL FACTS/IDEAS Bigger grow it is expected in the commercial user: • Need to better understand the operational processes of the user/client. • EO data and information is “only” an element of the solution for client need.

• Think in an integrate way => different value adding chain is created. • Final user is not the EO client. Identify the buyers but understand their clients too. • Need to identity and address intermediate industrial clients.

INITIAL FACTS/IDEAS Expand geographically the utilization of data: • EU is currently in a privileged position to offer solutions based on EO data. Industrial knowledge base on Sentinel data and services is unique. • Look abroad as other countries could be good candidates to expand the data utilization: • geography makes EO data more suited to address their needs, • lack of availability of other data sources, • Fewer capability of local industry to provide such kind of data,…

INITIAL FACTS/IDEAS Make the data easier to be adopted, fill technological gap: • Certification, quality assurance,… will, potentially, simplify the adoption of the client of the data. • Trusted bodies provided (such as EARSC initiative) certification will help to expand data.

• Standarisation process, industry product portfolio,… will also show to the final client a well mature offer facilitating the adoption of them. • Industry and institutions shall work together.

INITIAL FACTS/IDEAS Nothing static, everything changes dramatically: • Need continuous feedback along the full EO value chain identifying gaps: • • • • • • •

Platforms, sensors, operations concepts EO satellite data. EO methods to extract information. Data capabilities: formats, delivery methods, performance,… Business models… Capabilities integration ...

• Feed in R&D all the identified gaps to support in the definition of required programs to address the needs.

FEED INTO H2020 H2020 and EU and National programs support in such needs: • Specific funding opportunities for the VAE to develop. • Foster entrepreneurship. • Support the collaboration activities with potential export markets. Specific funding models to support export. • Funds for the implementation of certification, quality assurance bodies and processes. • Funding opportunities to explode markets, business models, intermediate buyers,… support in bringing together different communities. • Continuous awareness of the identified gaps, define roadmaps and include the required elements in the different WPs.
