The Ike Skelton Lecture Wednesday, Sept. 21 9 a.m. & 2 p.m. Hendricks Hall
Servant Leadership Lecture Series Every legacy, big or small, begins with a leader. The Servant Leadership Lecture Series, presented by Whiteman Air Force Base and the University of Central Missouri, features speakers who reflect both organization's shared values of service and leadership. Since its founding, UCM's focus on "education for service" has remained unchanged, and together, Whiteman AFB and UCM serve as the largest educators, employers and leadership training centers in the community. In 2011, UCM and Whiteman AFB enhanced their collaboration and formed The Whiteman Advantage, a program aimed to create a shared vision of community while improving opportunities for servicemen and women. During his time at Whiteman AFB, Brigadier General Thomas A. Bussiere strengthened the partnership among Whiteman, UCM and the Warrensburg community; his legacy of selfless, community-focused leadership provides the foundation for the series. The premiere event for the series, the annual Ike Skelton Lecture, will feature public leaders, including politicians, military figures, educators, business leaders and journalists. Speakers will focus on the spirit of service and leadership displayed by Ike Skelton during his life and the shared missions of Whiteman AFB and UCM.
Ike Skelton Lecture Cedric King (Master Sgt., U.S. Army) The third lecture of the series features Master Sgt. Cedric King. King will present the Ike Skelton Lecture at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016 in Hendricks Hall. King entered the United States Army in 1995. During a career that took him from an infantry private to a position of leadership in the elite Rangers, King graduated from a number of distinguished Army schools. These included the U.S. Army Jumpmaster Course, U.S. Army Pathfinder course, Air Assault course, the U.S. Army Ranger Course, and others. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal, and is a four-time Best Ranger Competition participant. On July 25, 2012, during his second tour in Afghanistan, King was severely injured by an improvised explosive device. The blast caused major internal injuries, permanent loss to part of his right arm and hand, and the amputation of both legs. He applied the same determined, can-do mindset to his recovery that he had relied on to succeed as an elite Army Ranger. With the love and support of his wife, Khieda, and daughters, Amari, and Khayma, he began rebuilding his life. Just 21 months after losing both legs, King completed the Boston Marathon, running on prosthetic blades. He has competed in a number of physically daunting events, including a 70.3-mile half Ironman Triathlon, the 2014 New York City Marathon, and the 48.6-mile Disney Marathon series. There, he successfully completed four runs in four days -- a 5k, 10k, half marathon, and full marathon. King shares his inspirational story of endurance with audiences across the country, including schools, churches, the National Football League, and Fortune 500 companies. Just as he led and motivated men and women in combat, he now leads and motivates others to see their possibilities.

Understanding and Managing the New Overtime Rule of 2016 (including the newly proposed Overtime Reform Enhancement Act) Date: 9/21/16, 11:45a – 1:15p Presenters: Bob & Doris Scribner Issue: On May 2016, the DOL enacted a rule raising the salary threshold of minimum wage to $47,476 per year. What this means in simple terms for the employer. If you’re paying someone on a salary basis AND not paying them overtime, legally you have until Dec 1, 2016, to start paying them at least $47,476 or get stuck for paying them overtime and penalties for back taxes. There is a new law before the U.S. House of Representatives (OREA) that, if passed, would more slowly implement that threshold. The Problem: Many employers are still not properly implementing the parts of the Overtime Rule that haven’t changed, much less aren’t prepared for the new rule. This is problematic due to the increase in DOL auditors and the hefty fines for improperly implementing the rule. RSVP & Pay via: CLICK HERE For questions, e-mail
