Charter School Middle School Dear Parent or Guardian, The Villages Charter Middle School has a Required Summer Reading Program. The program’s goal is to keep students reading throughout the summer. Reading is the key to success in school and it is important that our students practice the reading skills that they have worked so hard all year to master. The following is the Required Summer Reading List for 6th–8th grade. All of these titles can be found at your local library, online, or at most bookstores. The list includes the current fifteen Sunshine State Young Reader’s books, along with various other titles related to this year’s theme, provided with this list.
Reading is Seriesously Fun!
All local libraries and bookstores have been
Your child must read at least four of the titles from the Required Summer Reading List (not previously read) and complete an AR test for each of the four titles by August 9, 2006. The point value of all four books combined should total at least ten. We expect all of our students to meet this first goal of the 2007 school year and will provide additional opportunities for students who do not fulfill this requirement with 2nd Chance Ranch on Saturday, August 12, 2006. Students should be prepared to do a reading response on one of the titles during the first two weeks of the 2006-2007 school year. Any student wishing to get a head start on the reading response can find the procedures/requirements online at the Critical Thinking page of the school’s website. For your convenience, VCMS will be open on the following dates and times for students wanting to come in and take AR tests over the summer. Please report to the media center for testing. Books will also be available for check out at this time, based on availability. June 6th – Tuesday June 23rd – Friday July 10th – Monday

New this Summer!!! Get ahead on Informational Parental Involvement for 2007….. There are many benefits students experience as they dive into a variety of literature and our hope is to share some of these profitable experiences with our parents as well. Therefore, we are providing you, our parents, with some selections that will hopefully help you better understand your child as they journey through the adolescent years. An added bonus is that parents will be able to earn valuable informational parent involvement time while expanding the understanding of your “tween”. Parents will be awarded two PI hours for each book read with a passing score on the accompanying AR test. The accountability system for you will be very similar to what your child experiences. After reading the book of your choice, you will need to take an AR test on that book in our school’s library. Just like your child, a score of 60% or higher is considered passing and once achieved 2 hours on informational involvement time will be added to your parent involvement account. Limited copies of these titles will be available in our school’s library and, with prior notification, arrangements for Saturday or evening testing can be made as well. We will continue to provide a variety of opportunities throughout the year for you to earn Informational Parent Involvement time, but we considered this to be another avenue to not only accommodate busy schedules but to model the importance of reading. Parental selections are as follows: Homework Without Tears by: Lee Canter The Tween Years: A Parent’s Guide for Surviving Those Terrific, Turbulent, and Trying Times: by Donna Corwin The 7 Worst Things Good Parents Do by: John and Linda Friel
One behalf of the Critical Thinking and Media departments, Happy Reading!
