PRINCIPAL’S REPORT A very busy term is rapidly finishing with this the last Chatterbox for Term 2. This week we have welcomed the staff and students from Torrens PS in the ACT to our school for the first part of our exchange program. The students took part in a Public Speaking competition, various Sporting activities, attended a Pizza and Disco evening and the Torrens students visited various Sydney icons as part of their excursion. The Public Speaking competition was judged by a staff member from East Hills Boys High School. We are building very strong relationships with East Hills Boys (along with our other local high schools) and are very grateful for the ongoing support that is given. Our Semester 1 Reports go home this week with the Parent / Teacher Interviews being held in the first week back on Wednesday, 15 July. Please note that 4/5R and 5TS interviews will be on Monday, 20 July, due to the unavailability of the teachers involved in Week 1. Please take advantage of this time to clarify any part of the report you do not understand and be aware that we schedule a 10 minute time slot for each interview. Information about booking online is provided as a part of your Report package. If it is necessary for a longer interview the class teacher will recommend this at the point of interview. We do want to try to abide by the interview schedule for all concerned. Please ensure that you leave enough time between interviews, if you have more than one child at the school, to support moving from one part of the school to another. I would like to sincerely thank all staff (both teaching and non-teaching) for their enormous efforts this semester and also the school community for your wonderful support. I would also like to wish all staff and students a safe, happy and restful holiday. We look forward to seeing you all again next term after we all enjoy a relaxing Winter Break. Staff return to school on Monday, 13 July and students Tuesday, 14 July. With my best wishes,

Sandra Palmer. Value of the Fortnight Co-operation

Please support us at home by having discussions with your child/children about what ‘Co-operation’ means at home, at school and in the community.

UNIFORM SHOP We now have Football Socks back in stock. These socks are from a new supplier and are of much better quality, but unfortunately we have had to increase the price to $15 a pair. Unfortunately there has been a manufacturing issue with the School Microfibre Jackets. Their delivery will be delayed until the end of June. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Uniform Shop Co-ordinator.

VISUAL ARTS ENRICHMENT STAGE 2 Term 2 saw a selection of students across Stage 2 participate in the Visual Arts Enrichment Program. Students were introduced to the digital photographic program, Photoshop. They developed skill, knowledge and confidence to create a digital artwork which was titled “The Moving Image”. The project involved the process of eliminating a photograph of themselves entirely and bringing the image back through the use of Photoshop. The students have produced fantastic artworks which they should be immensely proud of. Congratulations and well done! Miss C Simpson, Art Enrichment Coordinator.

DEBATING ROUND 3, 2015 On Thursday, 11 June the Debating Team competed in the Round 3 debate against Revesby Public School. The topic was “Animals Should Not Be Kept in Zoos” and Panania argued the affirmative side. Both teams displayed strong speaking skills and gave good rebuttals. However, the adjudicator was very impressed with Panania’s effective use of examples to capture the audience’s emotions and we were declared the winner on the day. The speakers (Jacalia Fenton, Ashley Petersen and Charlotte Wells) did a tremendous job and were aptly supported by team advisor Natasha Angel. Fantastic effort team! Mrs D Cameron, Miss S Glover & Mr S Newman, Debating Coaches.

What is the MS Readathon? The MS Readathon is an iconic reading-based fundraiser that found its beginnings in schools across Australia. This year, the MS Readathon celebrates its 36th birthday, and it encourages people of all ages to read and improve their literacy whilst at the same time empowering them to make a difference in the lives of people living with MS. Participants read as many books as possible during the month of August and ask friends and family to sponsor them either online or by giving a donation in cash or cheque. This money goes towards providing vital support and services for people and their families living with MS. All participants receive a certificate of appreciation and the highest fundraisers in each state receive a trophy. Who can participate? Anyone can! Although most participants are primary school age children, there is no age limit. Your whole family can register and fundraise - you could even have a friendly competition going! Anyone is welcome to change the world, one book at a time. Key Dates: June / July - Registrations open 1-31 August - MS Readathon reading period 31 October - Sponsorship money due November - Certificates of Appreciation sent and highest fundraisers announced Taking part in the MS Readathon is easy! 1. Register online at www.msreadathon.org.au. 2. Read throughout August. Children can read any literature - books, e-readers, even their homework! 3. Fundraise from family and friends. Our School has had a long tradition of supporting the MS Readathon. It’s easy and lots of fun to support this worthwhile cause. Multiple Sclerosis is the fasting growing neurological disease affecting young Australians. It is a lifelong disease for which a cause and cure are yet to be found and an additional 1000 Australians are diagnosed with MS every year. Mr B Dodd, Coordinator.

WOOLWORTH’S EARN & LEARN Once again, Panania PS will be participating in the Woolworth’s Earn & Learn program. The program commences this year on Wednesday, 15 July, the first week of Term 3. In previous years we have received thousands of dollars worth of resources and equipment for our school.

KADUL WITH RYKA ALI INCURSION

BELONGING DAY – 11 JUNE, 2015

Last Thursday Panania Public School experienced the richness of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through an incursion entitled Kadul with Ryka Ali.

Our Indigenous students participated in their first Belonging Day for 2015 on Thursday, 11 June at East Hills Girls Technology High School. The Belonging Program has been running for 11 years and allows Indigenous students to participate in valuable learning experiences which provide students with opportunities to enhance their connection to both their community and culture.

The show included participatory dances with the students (and teachers), as well as presentations and explanations of various instruments, artefacts and costumes specific to the Islands. The Aboriginal culture was also introduced with students being ‘painted up’ and having the significance and importance of the designs explained to them. Both cultural flags were discussed along with the pertinence of various Aboriginal musical instruments and artefacts. As you can see in the photos below, the students were highly engaged at all times. Mrs K Ernsteins. Year 1 Teacher and one of the lucky audience members.

Our students were fortunate to meet the extraordinary, multi-talented Indigenous performer Boori Monty Pryor. He has performed in film, television, sport, music and theatre. He has also written many books and won numerous awards for these books. My Girragundji is just one of his well-known books (about to be made into a film). On the day, students were captivated by the stories Boori told them and could connect on many levels to the experiences he shared with them. Boori talked openly with the students about his culture and asked the students to share theirs with him. The students had a fantastic day and were amazed by his performance. Mrs C Hoffmeister, Belonging Day Coordinator.
