CHILD​ ​ABUSE​ ​AND​ ​NEGLECT Background Children​ ​have​ ​the​ ​right​ ​to​ ​be​ ​safe,​ ​secure,​ ​and​ ​receive​ ​adequate​ ​care​ ​at​ ​home,​ ​at​ ​school,​ ​and​ ​in the​ ​community.​ ​All​ ​staff​ ​are​ ​to​ ​respond​ ​to​ ​a​ ​suspected​ ​or​ ​alleged​ ​child​ ​abuse​ ​and​ ​neglect.​ ​This must​ ​be​ ​in​ ​compliance​ ​with​ ​the​ ​provisions​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Child,​ ​Youth​ ​and​ ​Family​ ​Enhancement​ ​Act​ ​and in​ ​cooperation​ ​with​ ​directors​ ​of​ ​Alberta​ ​Social​ ​Services​ ​and​ ​the​ ​police​ ​in​ ​their​ ​investigations​ ​of child​ ​abuse​ ​and​ ​neglect​ ​cases. Procedures 1. Principals​ ​are​ ​responsible​ ​to​ ​ensure​ ​that​ ​all​ ​staff​ ​members​ ​are​ ​aware​ ​of​ ​the​ ​document​ ​Child Abuse/Domestic​ ​Violence​ ​Protocol​ ​(2013) https://dl.cssd.ab.ca/d2l/le/content/958841/viewContent/2265407/View_​. This​ ​handbook​ ​is​ ​intended​ ​for​ ​use​ ​by​ ​school​ ​personnel​ ​to​ ​aid​ ​in​ ​understanding​ ​child​ ​abuse, their​ ​professional​ ​and​ ​legal​ ​obligation​ ​to​ ​abused​ ​children,​ ​procedures​ ​to​ ​be​ ​followed​ ​when they​ ​suspect​ ​child​ ​abuse,​ ​and​ ​the​ ​steps​ ​taken​ ​by​ ​other​ ​responsible​ ​agencies​ ​upon​ ​being made​ ​aware​ ​of​ ​a​ ​problem. 2. Youth​ ​prostitution​ ​is​ ​considered​ ​child​ ​abuse​ ​pursuant​ ​to​ ​the​ P ​ rotection​ ​of​ ​Sexually​ ​Exploited Children​ ​Act​ ​(PSECA)​​ ​and​ ​shall​ ​be​ ​addressed​ ​as​ ​such​ ​under​ ​the​ ​Child​ ​Abuse/Domestic Violence​ ​Protocol​ ​(2013): https://dl.cssd.ab.ca/d2l/le/content/958841/viewContent/2265407/View​. 3. The​ ​following​ ​sections​ ​from​ ​the​ ​Child​ ​Abuse/Domestic​ ​Violence​ ​Protocol​ ​must​ ​be​ ​reviewed by​ ​school​ ​personnel​ ​in​ ​investigating​ ​child​ ​protection​ ​concerns: ●
