6 PLANNING YOUR HOLIDAY

Hong Kong Tian Tan Buddha, Lantau Island

Exotic, vibrant, colourful and buzzing with people, Hong Kong is an unforgettable city that will stimulate the senses like no other. From its towering, modern skyscrapers and sophisticated restaurants to its street-style markets and roadside food stalls, it’s a fascinating place full of wonderful things to see and do. The spectacular harbour vistas, lofty mountain peaks and the famous neon-lit alleys will wow you. The extravagant designer shopping malls and the colourful, bustling night markets will satisfy any shopping enthusiast. For another feast of the senses, take the hour-long ferry trip to Macau to experience its unique mix of Portuguese and Chinese cultures and of course, its famous Las Vegas-style casinos.

Hong Kong

Kowloon

Hong Kong Island

Hong Kong is a story in three parts: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories. Together, they’re a combination of modern skyscrapers and ancient temples, tai-chi, beaches, mountains and deserted islands. Then there is the shopping; designer fashion, electrical goods and charming local souvenirs. It is also renowned as a gourmet’s paradise, with an abundance of exceptional cafes and restaurants. Originally a small fishing community and a haven for travellers and pirates, it was used by the British as a naval base during the Opium Wars with China. It remained a British colony from 1842 until sovereignty was transferred to the People’s Republic of China in 1997.

Kowloon is a bustling mixture of shops, fantastic bars, pubs, restaurants and markets. It is connected to Hong Kong Island by three tunnels and the MTR, but a trip across Victoria Harbour on a Star Ferry is the ideal way to commute between the two. Be tempted by the Temple Street Night Markets and wander along Nathan Road for its vast range of shopping.

Home to the original settlement of the Hong Kong territory, Victoria, Hong Kong Island is the city’s financial and business hub, where charming colonial buildings sit next to modern skyscrapers. The island features restaurants, bars and shopping. Visit the SoHo district for upscale boutiques, bars and a wide variety of restaurants. Travel on the tram car to Victoria Peak, pick up some souvenirs or artworks and fashion at Stanley Market or dine at one of the famous floating restaurants on Aberdeen Harbour. At night the skyline dazzles with a neon light show.

HONG KONG New Territories

Dining Renowned as the culinary capital of Asia, Hong Kong boasts more than 12,000 restaurants, many of which are clustered in defined food districts. In addition to enjoying the best Cantonese and regional Chinese food, visitors can sample a full range of authentic Asian cuisines as well as superb Western culinary delights. Hong Kong is home to over 200 Michelin-rated restaurants.

In each land, enjoy the high-quality rides, meet your favourite Disney Characters, and watch amazing Broadway-style shows. Mystic Point is the most recent addition, designed to appeal in particular to all fans of the mysterious and the magical. The mystical journey takes guests through Mystic Manor, the stately Victorian mansion belonging to the eccentric explorer Lord Henry Mystic, in search of his private treasures; they can also jump on the Mystic Magneto-Electric Carriage for a series of thrilling encounters thanks to Music Dust. The highlight of Grizzly Gulch is the exhilarating Big Grizzly Mountain Runaway Mine Cars, complete with grizzly bears waiting to send guests on detours. There’s also exuberant water play at Geyser Gulch as well as country and western-style musical entertainment. Toy Story Land is packed with fun, from Andy’s speediest toy car RC Racer to the exciting Toy Soldier Parachute Drop and the mellower Slinky Dog Spin. Often touted as the ‘Vegas of the East’, Macau is famous for its casino scene. Even if gambling isn’t your thing, the odds are you’ll love the experience of wandering through the extravagant casinos. A former Portuguese colony, the region’s Mediterranean influence is evident through its beautiful fortresses, baroque-style churches and delicious food. This influence, interlaced with the Chinese and shrines, makes for a fascinating place to discover and explore. Only an hour-long journey by TurboJet from Hong Kong Island, Macau is considered a shopping mecca and, every November, the place becomes even more alive as it plays host to the Macau Grand Prix. Embark on a walking tour of historic Shanghai - see the art deco-style buildings of the Bund and meander along the quaint winding lanes of the Nongtang. Days 3-4: Luoyang/Shaolin

Arrive into Luoyang around 7.00am after the overnight train journey. Then travel onwards to Shaolin (approx. 3 hour drive), check into the hotel and freshen up for the day ahead. This afternoon visit Shaolin Temple to live out some martial arts fantasies at the birthplace of kung fu. Maybe even enrol in a kung fu lesson! Also visit the forest of Pagodas. On day 4 leave in the morning to explore the Longmen Grottoes (approx. 3 hour drive), which are made up of around 2,100 caves filled with more than 100,000 statues of Buddha that date back to the 4th century. In the afternoon take a bullet train from Luoyang to Xi’an (approx. 2 hours) and arrive in enchanting Xi’an in the early evening. Overnight: Luoyang Daijudian Hotel or similar and Union Alliance Atravis Executive Hotel or similar

Days 5-6: Xi’an

Famed as the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, Xi’an is one of the oldest cities in China. Take a tour of the city centre, passing by the Bell & Drum Towers, the Muslim Quarter and the imposing City Gate. Visit the renowned Terracotta Warriors, unearthed by farmers in the ‘70s after being buried for thousands of years. In spare time, why not visit Xi’an Huiling - an Intrepid Foundation-supported project helping young people with intellectual and learning disabilities. Overnight: Union Alliance Atravis Executive Hotel or similar and Overnight Sleeper Train Watch prayer flags flutter in the breeze and saffron-robed monks stroll about the enchanting Tibetan town of Xiahe. A place of pilgrimage for many Tibetans, Xiahe is as scenic as it is tranquil. Spend some time with a Tibetan family and learn about their way of life. Later, visit the Labrang Monastery and see Tibetan monks performing their daily rituals and chants. Overnight: Xiahe Overseas Tibetan Hotel or similar and Overnight Sleeper Train

Square - apparently the largest down town square in the world. Framed by the Gate of Heavenly Peace with its Mao portrait, Mao’s Mausoleum, the Great Hall of the People and the National Museum it’s a place of pilgrimage for Chinese tourists who consider it the heart of their nation. An incredible piece of engineering, the Great Wall stretches 6,000 kilometres westwards from the mountain ridges north of Beijing. It was originally constructed to protect Chinese empires from the ‘barbarians’ of the north and even though it failed in this purpose, it’s still without a doubt one of the country’s most remarkable achievements, and an iconic destination. The trek includes some steep, remote terrain (approx. 5 kilometres or 3-4 hours walking depending on fitness). Some parts of the wall are unrestored and will require high concentration to keep a safe footing. Reasonable fitness and walking shoes with good support and grip will be required for this activity. There are many steps and slopes on the way so be prepared for a tough climb in sections. The views and experience though are a real highlight. Overnight: Dong Fang Hotel or similar

Days 10-13: Beijing

Enter the imposing Forbidden City, former home to China’s imperial rulers and filled with palaces, gardens and seemingly never-ending grand courtyards. Explore Tiananmen
