Course Description & Objectives: This course, the third term of Mandarin Chinese, is designed for the intermediate-level students who have the basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The uses of six basic functional components of the Chinese sentence are expanded and new vocabulary and idiomatic expressions are introduced. Selected readings about Chinese culture and literature will be explored. This course is taught entirely in original Chinese characters, and students may use either Chinese writing system to develop their knowledge and ability. Student Learning Outcomes (SLO): 1. Students completing the course will be able to participate in intermediate level conversations concerning daily situations. 2. Students completing the course will be able to demonstrate an intermediate command of complement of time, quantity, and resultative construction in answering oral and written questions, in related class exercises and homework. 3. Students completing the course will be able to interpret Chinese Tang dynasty poems and culture in group/class discussions and presentations. Participation: It is advisable to notify the instructor via email in advance for any expected absences and tardiness. Any emergencies that result in absences or tardiness should be reported to your instructor via email at your earliest convenience. If you miss more than two hours of the class you need to explain it to your instructor and prepare to present a document for your excuses.

Your participation points will be deducted to instructor’s discretion depending on your missed hours and accordingly your grade may go one letter down, which means from A to B or from B to C, etc. Tests: All tests are scheduled. Please arrange your personal business in advance according to this schedule.

Homework & Popup Quizzes: Homework includes textbook and workbook exercises, as well as assignments, speaking practice, presentation, and other activities assigned by the instructor. Popup quizzes will comprise dictation, sentence-making, and other formats of listening, writing, etc. Late work will be recorded; points will be deducted according to the occurrences. It is very important that students turn in their homework in time and finish all required work by the required date. All pages must be stapled and have your name, section number and date on the front page. All homework will be collected at the beginning of the class period. Final Exams: Final exams include oral presentation and written test, and will be conducted separately during the final week.
