Classification is a helpful tool to categorize them based on certain common characteristics. This enables scientists to study them in a more systematic way. The study of living beings is essential for the benefit of humankind. Discovery of new medicines, and better yielding crop varieties can be made possible only by systematic study of living beings. Moreover, environmental protection also makes it necessary for us to study the living beings in a systematic way. 2. Why are the classification systems changing every now and then? For example all mammals have mammary glands to secrete milk, have hairy body. All birds or aves have pneumatic bones to assist in flying. The common character among them is the presence of notochord thereby making them members of the same phylum.

Both humans and monkeys can use their hands to manipulate objects and can walk on their hind legs. (iv) Genus: comprises a group of related species which has more characters in common in comparison to species of other genera. We can say that genera are aggregates of closely related species. For example, potato, tomato and brinjal are three different species but all belong to the genus Solanum. Lion (Panthera leo), leopard (P. pardus) and tiger (P. tigris) with several common features, are all species of the genus Panthera. This genus differs from another genus Felis which includes cats. 9. How is a key helpful in the identification and classification of an organism? Answer: Keys are pairs of two contrasting characters. Selection of one character leads to rejection of another character while identifying a particular species or genera or family and so on.
