Classical History Lessons – Assyria Falls to Babylon The mighty Assyrian empire fell to the Babylonians in 612 BC. The kingdom had been weakened by rapid expansion and constant warfare. The last great king was Ashurbanipal. He tried to protect his kingdom by hiring mercenaries, but they did not prove to be a reliable defense for his kingdom. Meanwhile, the Chaldean King Nabopolassar had captured Babylon. He allied with the Medians to attack and destroy Assyria’s capital city of Nineveh. In 1847, the ruins of Nineveh were uncovered by archaeologist Austen Henry Layard. One of the major finds was the great Library of Ashurbanipal which shed much light on the history of Assyria.
