Click-iT® Detection Assays Comparison to Traditional Detection Technologies

Green Benefits • Alternative to radioisotopes—enables you to eliminate the exposure, handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive materials from your laboratory

Introduction Life Technologies is committed to designing products with the environment in mind—it’s one more step toward a smaller footprint. This fact sheet provides the rationale behind the environmental claim that the Click-iT® detection assays are less hazardous than other common methods of detecting cell proliferation and protein synthesis. The use of Click-iT® detection assays provides an alternative to exposure to radiation for performing common cellular and biochemical analyses, including detection of cell proliferation and monitoring of protein synthesis and metabolism using the isotopes 3 H-thymidine and 35S-methionine, respectively. The novel chemistries developed for Click-iT® assays enable detection at sensitivity similar to that of radioactivity, without requiring the use of radioisotopes.

Green Features Less Hazardous Traditional technologies for in vivo and in vitro labeling of nucleic acids, protein/peptides, and other small biomolecules utilizes radioactive tracers. In addition to the inherent physical and biological hazards associated with the use of radioactivity, regulatory management activities are intensive and waste storage and/or disposal costs are very high. Click-iT® detection assays provide an alternative to the use of radioactivity, thereby eliminating the need for radioactive licenses, and such burdensome regulatory requirements as reporting, recordkeeping, medical surveillance, shielding, and special disposal requirements.
