This position is opened in the Unit of Neglected Tropical Diseases (Prof. Johan van Griensven) with the aim to be a member of the ITM outbreak research team (ORT). Research protocols to prevent, assess and manage outbreaks and epidemics are to be developed together with the other disciplines in the ORT (such as epidemiology, social science, diagnostic microbiology, molecular biology, health systems and policy and ecology). ASSIGNMENT • You will work as a researcher in the Unit of Neglected Tropical Diseases, while playing an active role in the interdepartmental outbreak research team, in collaboration with biomedical and public health researchers. • You will conduct research activities in the field of tropical epidemic infectious diseases, in collaboration with other actors within and outside our institution, in low-resource countries and in Belgium/Europe. • You will regularly perform short missions to low-resource settings for outbreak investigation-related assignments, which may lead to the identification of research gaps and the implementation of relevant clinical research activities. • You will be involved in drafting grant applications for additional outbreak research proposals. • You will elaborate and update generic research protocols and will work closely with the ITM Clinical Trials Unit to explore innovative ways to conduct clinical research during outbreaks/emergencies. • You will contribute to systematic reviews on current generic and disease-specific management of potential infectious threats (arthropod-borne, respiratory, feco-oral,…) in view of epidemic preparedness. • You will actively take part in the departmental research on evidence-based medicine and clinical decisionmaking, with a focus on diseases with an epidemic potential. • You will participate in research on febrile illness in the tropics and in travelers during inter-epidemic periods. • You will write or contribute to scientific publications. • You will contribute to the educational activities related to outbreak management provided by the department. • You will contribute to the unit’s and the ORT’s key outputs and activities. PROFILE • You are a medical doctor with an additional master in public health or epidemiology. • You hold a diploma in tropical medicine and a PhD. • You have significant field experience (more than 4 years) in clinical management of infectious and tropical diseases and relevant experience in epidemic preparedness in low-resource settings • You have relevant and extensive experience in clinical research. • You have good conceptual, analytical and scientific writing skill • You have an interest in research in tropical and emerging infectious diseases • You have the flexibility to travel to low resource settings for outbreak investigation on a short-term notice. • You are able to speak and write in English and French. Knowledge of Dutch and other relevant languages (Spanish) is an asset • You are a team player, have good communication and can build strong multi-disciplinary working relationships • You are quality driven, service minded and result orientated OFFER • An intellectually stimulating, international and socially committed environment, with room for personal initiative. You are stationed in Antwerp but you may frequently travel for extensive periods of time to outbreak areas. • A fulltime position up to 31 December 2019, extendable. Starting date as soon as possible. • A salary according to the pay scales of the Flemish universities and to your work experience, with supplementary extralegal benefits: a public transport subscription and/or bicycle fee, private pension scheme and meal vouchers subscription. RESEARCH FELLOW ENTOMOLOGY Department of Biomedical Sciences
The Department of Biomedical Sciences focuses on pathogen and vector-based research, training and services, with emphasis on tropical and infectious diseases in resource-limited settings. We are looking for an experienced entomologist who will contribute to the understanding of drivers of transmission of outbreak-prone diseases, the design and evaluation of multi-disciplinary early warning systems, and the development and evaluation of outbreak prevention and control intervention strategies. This position is opened in the Unit of Medical Entomology, Department of Biomedical Sciences. Research protocols to prevent, assess and manage outbreaks and epidemics are to be developed together with the other disciplines in the ORT (such as epidemiology, social science, clinician, diagnostic microbiology, molecular biology, health systems and policy). ASSIGNMENT • You will contribute to the development of the interdisciplinary outbreak research team. • You will analyse existing data, develop research protocols and conduct studies on vector-borne disease ecology and vector ecology. • You are responsible for the entomological components of outbreak studies. • You will perform short missions to low-resource settings for outbreak investigation-related assignments • You will train and coach international scientists, students and local field teams. • In between outbreaks, you will perform relevant inter-epidemic research, develop teaching modules on outbreak investigation, follow-up outbreak alerts and prepare generic protocols. • You are responsible for the management and analysis of data on vector control strategies. • You will actively look for external funding. • You will build a network of internal and external contacts in your specialist field. • You will prepare publications for scientific journals and specialist magazines. • You will regularly perform international missions for outbreak research-related assignments. PROFILE • You hold a Master in Biology, Biomedical Sciences or related field. • You hold a PhD in a relevant field. • You have good knowledge of vector-borne disease ecology, vector control, vector biology, statistics, research methods and project management. • You have entomology field experience, preferably during outbreaks.
