COBA PRESIDENT ELIAS HUSAMUDEEN BLASTS MAYOR BILL de BLASIO AND DOC COMMISSIONER JOE PONTE AFTER A CORRECTION OFFICER SUSTAINS BROKEN JAW FROM UNPROVOKED INMATE ASSAULT ON RIKERS ISLAND TODAY “While Mayor de Blasio is campaigning on Staten Island and bragging about his administration’s accomplishments, one of New York City’s Boldest was brutally assaulted today by a 21 year-old inmate, charged with murder. The Correction Officer sustained a broken jaw from the unprovoked attack that occurred at the George M. Motchan Detention Center. He is being transferred to a hospital in Manhattan for emergency surgery. He has less than one year on the job. Even after being arrested last year, this inmate continued to commit violent crimes repeatedly behind bars and each time he faced no punishment because the Mayor eliminated punitive segregation for inmates 21 and under last year. While the union must once again visit the bedside of one of our victimized officers, not a single representative from City Hall or the Correction Commissioner’s office can be found. That’s a disgrace! Perhaps the public will begin to share our outrage when the City begins to release these violent felons into the streets as the Lippman Commission’s report recommends. The Lippman Commission’s report is nothing more than a smokescreen which is exactly why COBA has demanded that the city make the jails safer for everyone now, not in ten years.” --ELIAS HUSAMUDEEN COBA PRESIDENT Background on the Assaultive Inmate Inmate Tariq Hargrove, who committed this brutal assault, was arrested in Brooklyn last year and faces murder charges along with criminal possession of a weapon for the deaths of two men whom he shot. A detailed list of his crimes committed behind bars since his incarceration at Rikers Island is attached.
