COCOA IS CRITICAL TO THE LIVELIHOODS OF OVER 4 MILLION HOUSEHOLDS IN GHANA THE SECTOR SUPPORTS THE GHANAIAN ECONOMY BY WAY OF FOREIGN EXCHANGE EARNINGS , EMPLOYMENT AND THE PROVISION OF INFRASTRUCTURE INCLUDING ROADS, ELECTRICITY AND POTABLE WATER

COCOA PRODUCTION HAS INCREASE IN

RECENT YEARS FROM AN AVERAGE OF 350,000 MT IN THE 1990s TO A MEAN OF 800,000 IN THE LAST 3 YEARS REACHING A RECORD PEAK OF 1,000,000 MT IN THE 2010/11 SEASON

THE IMPROVEMENTS IN COCOA PRODUCTION

AND PRODUCTIVITY ARE DUE TO THE ADOPTION OF INTERVENTIONS INCLUDING: 

PAYMENT OF AT LEAST 70% OF THE fob PRICE TO FARMERS

INSTITUTION OF NEW NATIONAL COCOA EXTENSION SYSTEM IN 2010 IN A PUBLIC – PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP WITH MANY INSTITUTIONS SOME OF WHOM ARE PRESENT HERE



IT IS OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WORLD COCOA FOUNDATION THAT HAS PARTICULARLY STRENGTHEN OUR NATIONAL COCOA EXTENSION SYSTEM 6

PRIOR TO 2010, THE COCOA EXTENSION SYSTEM WAS INEFFECTIVE DUE TO INADEQUATE LOGISTICS AND EXTENSION PERSONNEL



WCF IN PARTNERSHIP WITH GHANA COCOA BOARD HAS TRAINED 37,024 FARMERS IN GOOD AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES USING THE FARMER FIELD SCHOOL EXTENSION APPROACH

45,903 FARMERS TRAINED IN BUSINESS SKILLS IN A PROGRAM CALLED FARMER BUSINESS SCHOOL 6,597 FARMERS LINKED TO CREDIT SERVICE PROVIDERS AFTER TRAINING 2 FULLY OPERATIONAL BUSINESS SERVICE CENTRES (SEWHI WIASO AND NEW EDUBIASE) USED BY 5,000 FARMERS TO ACCESS MARKET 8 INFORMATION, TRAINING AND INPUTS

OUR EXTENSION AGENTS AND OFFICERS HAVE RECEIVED TRAINING FROM WCF IN MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

USE OF MOBILE TELEPHONY TO SEND EXTENSION MESSAGES TO FARMERS  THE MESSAGES ARE TIMELY PRODUCTION, MARKET AND SOCIAL INFORMATION MEANT TO ENHANCE FARMERS’ DECISION-MAKING PROCESSES  THIS INNOVATIVE PROGRAMME IS CALLED COCOA LINK 

OVERALL PLAN FOR FARMER OUTREACH SCALE-UP OF THE WCF SUPPORTED PROGRAMMES  STRENTHENING OF NATIONAL EXTENSION PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP  SUPPORT TO NEW COCOA EXTENSION PLATFORM – COLLABORATIVE ENGAGEMENT BETWEEN GHANA COCOA BOARD AND UNDP  INCREASED FUNDING FOR EXTENSION AGENTS CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT AND ENHANCED LOGISTICAL SUPPORT TO COCOBOD EXTENSION SERVICES 

WE CHERISH OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE WCF WHICH HAS HELPED TO LIFT MANY COCOA HOUSEHOLDS OUT OF POVERTY WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE ADOPTION OF MANY MORE INNOVATIVE EXTENSION APPROACHES TO ENSURE THAT RESEARCH FINDINGS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE BETTERMENT OF FARMERS

Cocoa Rejuvenation Program in Côte d’Ivoire Objective; Improve cocoa production efficiency and cocoa farmers’ competitiveness on

diversified farms Key activities; • Creating awareness and facilitating access to Improved Planting Material - Sourced and distributed 22,750 hybrid pods from CNRA, enabling 610,000 hybrid high yielding seeds to be planted in 35 cooperative seed nurseries

- Trained 105 cooperative staff in nursery construction and maintenance

- Distributed 485,000 high yielding to 1,215 farmers to raise productivity to over 2mt / ha - Sourced and planted 110,000 leguminous shade trees, providing natural fertilizer

• Farmer Capacity Building in partnership with GIZ / ANADER - Trained 1,625 farmers incl. 11% female farmers, in Farmer Business School training, including sustainable farm regeneration, from 35 cooperatives. - Distributed 70 GPS units to 35 cooperatives to conduct yield surveys

Key Accomplishments/successes • Sourcing the required number of pods from CNRA within the main crop growth period to ensure better quality despite increased demand

- Able to obtain replacement pods from CNRA for several cooperatives with a lower number of seeds per pod

• 50% of cooperatives from 1st year sourced additional seeds from CNRA to further improve productivity

• Farmer Business School training extremely well received by all farmers especially female farmers • Program achieved targets within budget ; Prevailing cost per farmer $61.5 pmt

Scalability/Sustainability Plan • What is the plan for program continuation/scale up after Phase I? - 5 year agreements signed with each Cooperative - maintain nurseries for further 3 years under partnership - Finance pods from CNRA for cooperative cost • What opportunities exist for long-term sustainability/scalability? - Working with other Industry partners to promote Grafting in CDCs and RA / UNEP project - Ongoing discussions in PPPP to promote increased productivity and access to Improved Planting Material
