Colin Aitchinson Board of Directors Platform Students’ Union Elections 2014 My name is Colin Aitchison and I am seeking re-election to your Students’ Union Board of Directors. After serving a term on the Board, I feel that I am well-suited to continue to represent the needs of students on both the Waterloo and Brantford campuses. If re-elected, I will bring a level of experience back to the Board table, and be able to utilize this experience to continue building on the pillars outlined in last year’s platform. In addition to continuing to build on my promises, if I am re-elected I do intend to turn the experience I’ve gained this year into a leadership position, and seek the position of Vice-Chair. To begin, I want to continue to build on the promises I made during the last election. I stated in my platform that I would advocate on behalf of undergraduate students, and ensure that all decisions made at the Board table are made in the best interest of undergraduate students. I also stated that I would promote communication and transparency as a Director, something I believe that the current Board of Directors has done an effective job doing, be it by reducing the amount of in-camera sessions that the Board undergoes, or by the continued engagement of students through Ownership-Linkage events such as the Pass the Torch wine and cheese. Finally, I stated that I would equally represent students from both the Brantford and Waterloo campuses by ensuring that I factored in the impact that a decision I make would be in the best interest of all Wilfrid Laurier University Students. I feel that I have done an effective job in committing to what I stated within my platform, and would appreciate the opportunity to continue to represent Laurier undergraduates as a Director this coming year. Aside from continuing to do what I promised last year, my platform this year is focusing on experience and leadership. As a Director, I have had the opportunity to serve on multiple committees, as well as Chair the Policy Review Procedures Committee. I want to bring the experience I have gained back to the Board table next year, and assist in transitioning the new Directors to ensure that we hit the ground strong. That being said, if re-elected I do intend to utilize my experience and transform it into a leadership role by seeking election to Vice-Chair. If I am re-elected, and if elected Vice-Chair, I will work with the Chair in helping transition new Directors into the role, and will work towards mentoring new Directors in ensuring they are prepared for their role. As stated previously, if re-elected I intend to continue to build on the ideas of advocacy, communication, and equal representation, as well as to transform my experience on the board into a leadership role, to assist with the transition and functionality of the incoming board.
