Monatomic Anions

All Group 1A metal cations: +1 charge [Li+1, Na+1, K+1, Rb+1, Cs+1]

All Group 7A non-metal anions: -1 charge [F-1, Cl-1, Br-1, I-1]

All Group 2A metal cations: +2 charge [Be+2, Mg+2, Ca+2, Sr+2, Ba+2]

All Group 6A non-metal anions: -2 charge [O-2, S-2, Se-2, Te-2]

The names of these Group 1A and 2A cations are the same as the original metal names.

All Group 5A non-metal anions: -3 charge [N-3, P-3, As-3]

Other common monatomic cations are listed in the table below. Note that if a metal can form more than one cation, the ion charge is included with the ion name as Roman Numerals in brackets. Al+3 Cd+2 Cr+2 Cr+3 Cr+6 Co+2 Co+3 Cu+1 Cu+2 Ga+3 Au+1 Au+3 In+1 In+3 Fe+2 Fe+3

Polyatomic Cations There is only one common polyatomic cation: Ammonium, NH4+1.

All Group 4A non-metal anions: -4 charge [C-4] The names of these anions are based on the original non-metal names, but the endings are changed to –ide. Also note that hydrogen in ionic compounds is hydride, H-1 (behaves like a Group &A non-metal).
