Selected Student Feedback In my new cmap, I do not explicitly say that complete removal of oneself from the conventional agricultural system is an option. It may be possible, but in this class I have learned that there are many complex interactions going on at many different scales, and that elements of a system are so strongly interconnected that completely Overall, this type of concept mapping is a good idea changing the system could be impossible. and has helped my group layout the specifics of our research question, along with determining what areas of research need more information and what areas we could focus on for collecting data. I found it challenging to link class concepts and theories/ frameworks with this particular set of tools. This was a good challenge, though, as it made me put statistics into context and think about how we use them. Jim Proctor | CMC 2012 | Malta

Some Surprising Findings… ¤ High-achieving students were the ones most challenged by, and who most valued, concept mapping § Concept mapping thus exacerbates differences in student achievement? § Or: concept mapping works best for those who appreciate the complex connections of environment
¤ “Visual learners” (according to VARK) were the ones who least appreciated concept mapping § But they were also the lower-achieving students, in general

…and Tentative Recommendations Perspectives and process Cmaps helpful in approaching environment-as-connection: find opportunities for both Doing Cmaps in stages helps students refine thinking about connection: structure assignments as a progressive sequence Appreciate that Cmap representations of environment may be too much for certain students to cognitively grasp Commit fully: do a lot of Cmapping!
