Cognitive Tool 4 Concept MAPS

JULY

Background Most sensory information is received through the eyes, so concept maps are a highly effective tool for presenting information. Since concept maps require students to synthesise information, they are the ideal vehicle for students to construct their own learning.

Process Concept maps make explicit the links between cells on a map and explain the connection between ideas. They should not be confused with other types of visual maps such as spider webs, flow diagrams or bubble maps.

Step 2: Build Connections 2

Step 3: Explain Connections 3

Enter the idea in the top cell of the concept map.

Build connections outwards from the topic.

Explain the connections between each linked cell/idea.

Step 4: Extension 4 The Concept Map can keep ‘growing’ as the class synthesises the information they gathered.

Concept Maps are an excellent tool for reviewing information and can readily reveal any misunderstandings about the topic. Acknowledgement: This material has been reproduced with the permission of John Hunt, Senior Lecturer: Adjunct, University of the Sunshine Coast.
