Objective Automation e ffe cts on arous al could be pre dicte d diffe re ntly de pe nding on the Atte ntional The ory. The clas s ical The ory (Kahne man, 1973) cons ide rs the le ve l of arous al re liant only on ps ychological factors (s tre s s , fatigue and e motions ). Automation would only affe ct the tas k comple xity by allocating part of the cognitive proce s s ing to the s ys te m. Alte rnative the orie s s uch as Malle able Atte ntional Re s ource s The ory (MART) (Young and Stanton, 2002) as s ume s that automation would als o affe ct the le ve l of arous al and be de pe nde nt on controlle r´s e xpe ctations : whe n the ATCo e xpe cts that the tas k is e as y in the ne ar future , s he /he will re duce the arous al le ve ls and ge t bore d or s le e py (ove rconfide nce on automation). On the contrary, fe ars of automation failing would incre as e s tre s s and als o the le ve l of arous al caus ing dis orie ntation, ove racting or e rratic be haviour. Bas e d on the s e the orie s , AUTOPACE propos e s bas ic re s e arch on a Ps ychological Mode l to quantitative ly pre dict how automation would impact on human pe rformance bas e d on cognitive re s ource s mode ling (de mande d and available ), tas ks characte ris tics (automation), ps ychological factors mode ling (fatigue , s tre s s and e motions ) and ATCo e xpe ctations (ove rconfide nce vs fe ars of automation). A catalogue of training s trate gie s to s upport the controlle r be ing “in-the -loop” will be e xplore d. For the clas s ical The ory, the s trate gie s only for ke e ping atte ntion on the main tas k avoiding out-of-the -loop e ffe ct. For the MART the coach will be als o for coping with s tre s s . A re vie we d Curricula and ATCo Se le ction will be initiate d. Expe rt Judgme nt from Ps ychologis ts , ATM Expe rts and Controlle rs Traine rs s upporte d by Lite rature Re s e arch will look at future compe te nce s and training s trate gie s . The re s e arch on Ps ychological Mode ling will be als o s us taine d with Analytical Studie s by us ing an e xis ting prototype for de mande d re s ource s .
