From the Coordinator A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity describes an experience that is very special because it is the only time you might be able to have it. In 2013, our family had a large number of important milestones, including the college graduation of our youngest of four sons. We decided to celebrate by taking a trip to France in May to visit one of our other sons who has been working there. As we talked about this possibility in the months before we made our decision, we listed the pros and cons — what we kept coming back to was this trip might be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Not only was one son already in France and fluent in French, all of our four busy sons could make the trip. I can’t believe how many people shared with me their own experiences of taking a risk and grabbing an opportunity that might not come again! Now back from our adventure, I am so happy I was able to put aside all the “voices” that might have prevented me from taking this big step. I learned so much and was inspired to continue to push myself to travel more in the future. Speaking of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities — this fall, you might be able to see the brightest comet ever in your lifetime (read more in our back cover story). You can hopefully even see the comet right here, in your own community, at the historic Eisenhower Observatory. Did you know this gem is right in your own neighborhood? Maybe you’ve seen the big white dome on Eisenhower Community Center when you’ve passed by on Highway 7? I’m hoping that you’ll take advantage of this chance to learn more about the Eisenhower Observatory and join us during Comet Week (December 16- 20, page 23) to witness this once in a lifetime opportunity!

The Eisenhower Observatory will host Open House viewing events as ISON makes its pass through the sky (see beow). Lawrence Sauter brings Hopkins students the universe In 1955, industrial arts teacher, Lawrence “Dusty” Sauter, and his students built a large telescope and observatory on top of the roof of Hopkins High School. Ron is a tireless ambassador for helping people connect with the moon, planets, and the stars. “We’ve seen people cry at the telescope,” said Schmit. “It amazes me that so many people have never looked through a telescope.” Participants leave a viewing in awe of their experience. Mark your calendars for Comet Week — December 16-20 As comets get close to the sun, the ice in them turns into gas and creates a tail, streaking the sky with a dreamy sparkle. Ron and his Observatory volunteers are excited to present Comet Week, December 16–20. This fall, join this unprecedented comet appearance and plan to visit the historic Eisenhower Observatory for events around Comet ISON — it might just be a once in a lifetime opportunity! There will be an open-house format for comet viewing from 5:30-7:00 p.m. each night December 16-20, followed by regular Observatory viewings (with registrations) from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Note: During the regular viewing session, by 7:00 p.m. you probably won’t see much of the comet, but you can get a glimpse of all the other wonders in the night sky. Please note that the Comet Week open house events are after the perihelion – the comet’s closest approach to the Sun. We should be able to see it, if it survives its brush with the Sun!

Health Care Directive & Power of Attorney Joy Gullikson
Procrastinate no more! No matter what your age, give your loved ones an important gift by creating two legal documents — a Health Care Directive and a Power of Attorney — these documents are vitally important in the event you become incapacitated and cannot make decisions for yourself. A Health Care Directive (akin to the old “Living Will”) is a legal document that communicates your health care wishes and allows you to name someone to make health care decisions for you when you cannot speak for yourself. A Power of Attorney allows you to choose someone to handle your finances and property, and is effective immediately upon signing. In this class, you will prepare both of these documents so you won’t end up without these important legal documents in place. With the help of attorney Joy Gullikson, leave class with two notarized documents, and give yourself and your loved ones some peace of mind.
