Brooks/Cole Cengage, 2010. - OWL Online Web-based Learning system for Zumdahl and Zumdahl 8th edition, 6 months - DVC Chemistry 120 Experiments. - scientific calculator (one that does exponential notation and logarithms) - duplicate page laboratory notebook (carbon or carbonless) in which you will record lab data - safety goggles or safety glasses with side shields Recommended - Student Solutions Manual to Zumdahl and Zumdahl’s Chemistry, 8th edition. (this contains the solutions to half of the end of chapter problems – the ones with the answers in the back) - lab coat or apron - loose leaf notebook for course handouts, lab handouts, etc. - a flash drive/memory stick to transfer data from lab computers to your computer Buying Tips You only need a 6 month OWL access for this course. The OWL online learning system is available separately online ($47 for 6 months on the official OWL site) but the best deal, if you are buying a new textbook, is to buy a text with OWL bundled with it. The bundles of the textbook with OWL cost only $14 more than the textbook alone so I asked for the most stuff we could get for that $14. Our section’s bundles therefore include 24 month access to OWL and access to the ebook (total value $98 if bought online on OWL). If you don’t want to keep the book after the course is over, both the bookstore and places like Amazon offer buyback. It may be tempting to buy a really cheap 7th edition. The content is very similar. But the problems are different or have different numbers and I do assign specific homework problems. So if you don’t want to create a lot of hassle for yourself, buy the 8th edition. Since you can only use your OWL access code to register once, be sure you register in OWL online in the correct section. Register in the Sp 2012 section of Chem 120 - K. Long. The OWL homework system will be needed starting after the first day of the semester. If you have book fund issues, you can sign up online at OWL for Zumdahl 8th edition on the first day for a free two-week “trial offer”. All your work and grades will be transferred in to your purchased OWL account when you buy it. If you buy a used DVC Chemistry 120 Experiments book from someone, be sure all the fill-in worksheets and report sheets are still in it. In case it matters to you, the ebook in OWL and the large number of videos in OWL don’t work on an iPad because they use flash technology. Very frustrating if you have an iPad!
