Course Name: Distributed Database Management System (lectured in English only) Targets: To provide students with a strong foundation for addressing issues concerning distributed database processing. Traditional distribution issues are addressed in the context of relational database systems, e.g., distributed database design, distributed query processing, distributed transaction processing as well as distributed concurrency control. Students are also introduced to interoperable, distributed data processing architectures associated with the access of heterogeneous data sources. Hands-on experience on available commercial or educational products for technologies covered in class. Class Focus Areas, Motivation and Objectives: (1) Overview of Relational DBMS. (2) Overview of Distributed DBMS Architectures (3) Distributed DBMS Design (4) Semantic Data Control; Data Security (5) Distributed Query Processing (6) Distributed Transaction Management; Distributed Concurrency Control (7) Reliability of Distributed DBMS (8) Database Interoperability (9) Current Issues: Data Warehousing, Databases for Mobile Computing, Peer-to-Peer Databases, Transaction Processing for Workflow/Application Integration, Semantic Web Issues for Data Integration.
