You must register for this class so that I can access your work. Course Description: Students discuss author's purpose and begin using visual clues to aid in comprehension. They continue to build vocabulary while practicing and expanding academic reading skills. They are assigned independent reading, which they report on, both in speaking and in writing. Recommended to be taken concurrently with Low Intermediate Writing. Learning Outcomes: After successfully completing this course, you should be able to: • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Preview texts in order to make predictions about content Make predictions about content Identify main ideas of texts Identify important details of texts Use photos, pictures, glosses, and footnotes to comprehend nonfiction texts Identify author's purpose for writing Identify readers' purposes for reading Use context to determine the meaning of vocabulary Accurately use the vocabulary from Academic Word List 2 in written and spoken contexts Synthesize information from multiple sources in order to understand a concept Use word forms to understand vocabulary Use the dictionary to distinguish words with multiple meanings Read 1-2 books with 600-800 words

Attendance Policy: Improving your English requires dedication and practice. For this reason, attendance and participation in class is very important. Make a commitment to come to all of your classes and be on time. If you cannot attend a class, please notify me and ask about any work that you missed and need to make up. You are responsible for making up any missed work. You must attend a minimum of 75% of each of your classes each session in order to pass your classes and maintain good standing at MLI.

Evaluation and Grading: The course is pass/fail. To pass the course, students will need to get an average of 75% or higher. Informal and formal teacher assessments as well as student selfassessments are going to be used. Informal Assessment You will receive feedback on your comprehension of class materials through class discussion. Formal Assessment Reading logs - to monitor your extensive reading, due weekly Vocabulary quizzes - these will cover academic vocabulary Tests - You will have a midterm and a final test Self-Assessment Self-assessment is important because you know best whether you missed a question, misunderstood a text, etc. Pay attention to mistakes that you make in answering comprehension and vocabulary questions. Use the self-assessment checklists in the Q book to reflect on your learning. Ask questions to clarify your understanding and assess your skills. Q Online Practice: You should do the following exercises each week in each unit: Vocabulary 1 & 2, Reading Comprehension, Reading Skill, Vocabulary Skill, Grammar, and Grammar Expansion. Due dates will be announced in class. Extensive Reading: Extensive reading is the best way to build fluency and develop vocabulary knowledge. During this course, you will read at least two leveled readers with 600-800 words each (and more if you have time). You should read 25-50 pages a week and complete a weekly reading log about your reading. Leveled readers are available for checkout. You are responsible for the books you check out. If you lose one, you will be charged $10. Course Policies: • • • • • •

Come to every class and be prepared. Attendance, active participation as well as completion of all class and homework assignments are important to your success. Arrive on time to class. Do not use your cell phone in class. Speak English only in class. Do your own work (cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated -please refer to the Student Handbook for more information.) Demonstrate respectful behavior toward teachers and fellow classmates.
