Creating User – Windows Server 2012 Active Directory

Introduction: In this article we will see how to create a User or Users in Active directory Organizational Unit. Though the procedure is similar to Windows Server 2003 / Windows Server 2008 Active directory, I would specifically target on Windows Server 2012.

Active Directory Users and Computers Snap-in Below procedure is demonstrated by using Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in. This operation can be performed on • • • •

Primary Domain Controller Additional Domain Controller Install RSAT on Windows 7 and grants the necessary delegated rights to the user to perform User management. Install RSAT on Windows 8 client operating system and grant the necessary delegated right to the user to perform User management

Note: I have validated creation of User using RSAT tools from Windows 7 client Following are the steps included in creating user in an organizational unit. Step 1: click on Start and select Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in Step2: Right click on the Organizational Unit where you wish to create the User, click New , click User In the below example, I am creating the user under Research
Standard Worker Organizational Unit.

Note: If you do not see User option, the user account used to open Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in do not have necessary permissions. Users must have the delegated permission to create the User account in the desired OU.

Step3: Fill the User information and click OK to complete the process. Step4: Ensure the User account is successfully created under the required OU.

Creating User Using PowerShell: Below method shows the procedure to create a User under Active Directory using Powershell cmdlets.

new-ADUser -Name "Worker 5" -SamAccountName "Worker 5" -GivenName "Worker5" -SurName "Srv Tools" -Description "Server Tools Admin" -Organization "Avanade Asia" -Title "Srv Tools Engineer" -path 'OU=Standard Workers,OU=Research,DC=beta,dc=local' -Enabled $true -AccountPassword (ConvertToSecureString "P@ssw0rd" -AsPlainText -force)

Note: -Name and –SamAccountName attributes are important.

Creating User - DsAdd Tool: The below script will create User account “Worker6” in the mentioned DN. dsadd User "CN=Worker6,OU=standard Workers,OU=Research,DC=beta,DC=local" -samid "worker6" -fn "Worker6" -ln "srv tools" -Desc "Server admin" -title "Srv tools Admin" -company "Avanade Asia" disabled no -pwd "P@ssw0rd1"
