INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY

Crossword Activity 2

Key competences in activity 2 Competence in linguistic communication. Competence in knowledge of and interaction with the physical world. Competence in processing information and use of ICT. Competence in social skills and citizenship. Artistic competence. International Mother Language Day was launched by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999 and has been observed on February 21st every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. UNESCO believes that countries should encourage the use of mother tongues. It also aims to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue. The date represents the day in 1952 when students demonstrating for recognition of their language, Bangla (also called Bengali), as one of the two national languages of the then Pakistan, were shot and killed by police in Dhaka, the capital of what is now Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, the day is an official holiday. Each year has a special theme, for example, Braille and sign languages, Languages and cyberspace. This year the theme is the Book. In this activity, the children are going to complete a multilingual crossword.

In activity 2, the following key competences are developed: Competence in linguistic communication as they develop their knowledge of foreign languages and use the knowledge to complete the crossword and to discuss similarities between languages and the concept of false friends, competence in knowledge of and interaction with the physical world as they become aware of the variety of languages

one copy of Worksheet 1 for each child one copy of Worksheet 2 for each child one (enlarged) copy of Worksheet 3 (optional) one copy of Worksheet 4 for each child coloured pens, pencils or markers

Instructions: 1.

Tell the children about International Mother Language Day and ask them what languages they can speak. Tell them that they may know words from languages they do not speak, for example, German: Wir leben autos (from a car advert) or Italian: ciao (used as a greeting).

2.

Distribute Worksheets 1 and 2. Tell the children that it is a picture dictionary in six languages. Ask them to identify the country outlines and flags and to colour them in. You can use Worksheet 3 to remind them of the colours or, if you have an interactive whiteboard, use a link such as: http://www.photius.com/flags/alphabetic_list.html. Key: 1 United Kingdom, 2 France, 3 Germany, 4 Spain, 5 Italy, 6 Portugal.

3.

Ask them to write the name of the language under each flag. You can use the wordcards. Talk about the different translations. Which word is most similar in the different languages? Which language uses capital letters for the nouns? Which words could be considered ‘false friends’?

4.

Letʼs compare! In this section, we suggest you make the children aware of similarities and differences between the customs in their own country and those of other parts of the world. The main language spoken in the United Kingdom is English but there are six officially recognized minority languages: Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Lowland Scots, Cornish, Irish and British Sign Language. The main foreign languages learnt are French (23%), German (9%) and Spanish (8%). What languages are spoken in Spain? What foreign languages are taught? Which languages can you speak?
