CSI Awards 2014 Introduction
T
here are not many things that date as quickly as technology. The fast change of technological change is also changing consumption habits, which have altered significantly in recent years. Even just five or so years ago, the onset of multi-screen viewing caught many companies by surprise. Some large UK broadcasters admit they were caught unawares that there was a demand for people to watch videos on devices other than the main TV set. Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries at this year’s Cable Congress went so far as to say that the cable industry needs to thank Netflix, the early pioneer and poster child of the OTT movement if you will, for showing cable operators the way. Studies estimate there are now 6+ connected devices in the average European home and these are the new battle ground
for TV going forward. Conversely, despite the onset of time-shifted TV in all its different guises across all different platforms, live TV still rules and has proved remarkably resilient. It is easy to always get excited by the next big thing on the horizon but the broadcast industry also does a good job of being grounded to its roots. This combination of pragmatism and optimism is also in the heart of the CSI Awards. We like to keep up with the times and introduce and honour new technologies and achievements. Last year’s new ultra HD category has grown in line with an evolving ecosystem (as reflected by the variety of entries on our shortlist) that will take over ten years to play itself out. This year we welcome HbbTV and Big Data & analytics into the fold, both of which promise to bring many benefits to businesses and consumers alike. People often say that broadcasters have been too slow to adapt to the opportunities of data as the internet
continues to permeate the sector, so we look forward to seeing how things develop on this front. Those who wisely argue that technical complexities should be hidden away from end-users know this is often the real challenge. Behind every shiny UI is a backend and piece of kit that is less sexy but crucial to real-life operations. This is why CSI has always prided itself on rewarding less glamorous fields and will continue to do so. At the same time, a few of the platforms that have made this year’s shortlist have been around for two or three years but have managed to innovate to stay relevant, a little like fine wine. On that note, come to Room E102 at the RAI and do enjoy the drink as much as the trophy celebrations and well done to everyone who has made the shortlist. Hope to see all of you back in 2015! Goran Nastic, editor, CSI
