CSMA 101 Course Syllabus

COURSE SYLLABUS CSMA 101 CONVERSATIONAL CHINESE I

COURSE DESCRIPTION An introductory course designed to develop practical conversational Mandarin Chinese skills. Intended for students with no previous Chinese training and/or experience. RATIONALE Learning another language is very valuable in today’s global community, particularly Chinese. With over 1 billion native speakers, Chinese potentially holds one of the most influential positions in world politics, economy, culture, and The Great Commission. This course recognizes the importance of language study and assumes genuine student interest in learning to communicate fluently in Chinese.

MEASURABLE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: A.

Correctly produce the tones 50% of the time.

B.

Pronounce the initial and final syllables 70% of the time.

C.

Apply listening and speaking skills to communicate on basic daily topics.

D.

Demonstrate knowledge of novice-low difficulty level sentence structures verbally.

E.

Demonstrate the knowledge of sentence structures at novice-low difficulty level through writing with Romanized Chinese (Pinyin).

Textbook readings, Rosetta Stone Lessons, and presentations

Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.

Discussion Board Forum The discussion board is a collaborative learning experience. The forum requires the student to read an article of his/her choice on the topic of second language acquisition. The student must submit a thread of at least 300 words summarizing the article and reply to at least 2 classmates’ threads with at least 150 words each.

D.

Rosetta Stone Milestones (4) The student will work through Units 1–4 in Level 1. At the end of each unit, the student will complete a milestone assignment. The milestone assignment evaluates the student’s proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing as well as his/her knowledge of vocabulary and structure covered in that unit.

Rosetta Stone Studio Sessions (3) The student will complete 3 Studio Sessions through Rosetta Stone. The student must schedule a session and complete the Rosetta Stone Studio Session with a Studio Coach. Upon completion of each Studio Session, the student must take a Studio Session survey in Blackboard.

Oral Assessment Tutoring Appointments (4) The student will make an appointment with an Online Foreign Language Lab (OFLL) tutor to practice the speech tasks listed in the Oral Assessment Presentation Instructions. This will enable the student to prepare for his/her oral assessments.

G.

Oral Assessment Presentations (4) The student will record a video or audio for each presentation in which he/she completes all speech tasks stated in the Oral Assessment Presentation Instructions. The student must answer questions in Mandarin and correctly pronounce tones and syllables.

Oral Assessment Peer Feedback (3) The student will listen to at least 2 classmates’ presentations and provide peer feedback for each classmate.

Pretests (4) The student will complete a pretest before each test. The pretest questions will be based on reading/study of Rosetta Stone, the presentations, and the textbook. Each

pretest will be open-book/open-notes, contain 5 multiple-choice questions, and will not have a time limit. Each pretest will have an unlimited number of attempts. J.

Tests (4) There will be a test at the end of each Rosetta Stone unit to reinforce what has been learned and assess the student’s mastery of each skill. The tests will measure knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures. Each test will be open-book/open-notes, contain short-answer questions, and have a 40-minute time limit.

K.

Final Exam The Final Exam will consist of 2 parts: a written examination and an oral examination. Oral: The student will complete an oral assessment which will require him/her to participate in an oral interview. Written: The student will write a dialogue using specified expressions and structures he/she will have learned during the course. The written portion will be open-book/open-notes and will have a 45-minute time limit.

Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1.

Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction.

Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction.

3.

Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the course will not be accepted.

Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted.
