10 a.m. Final exam (Tuesday)

Grading Each exam or assignment will be assigned points according to the following scale. Letter grades for the course are assigned according to the standard Religion Department breakdown (90=A, 80=B, etc). 2 exams @100 pts. Outside reading Ethnographic readings @ 25 pts Written reactions to videos Interview Report Cross-Cultural Worship Report Research Paper 8 Textbook readings at 20 pts each Attendance

200 150 100 10 pts each 100 100 100 160 100

Late work: Assignments coming in late or exams taken late will be subject to a grade reduction. It often makes more sense to hand in rushed work rather than none at all. Course requirements: 1. Attendance. An important component of this course is what happens in the classroom: lectures, presentations, interaction and discussions. After 6 absences, each additional absence will deduct 10 points from the attendance grade. 2. Reactions to Videos. Through the semester we will see several video tapes. By the next class period, hand in a minimum one-page summary or reaction. If you miss a class in which a video is shown, you may view the video in the media center and turn in the reaction for full credit. 3. “Becoming a foreigner” -- Cross-cultural worship. Attend a service in a church ethnically different from your own (anglos, for example, could visit a black, hispanic or a korean church). You may want to go together in small groups. Report your experience, feelings, observations in a 2-page paper. The importance of this assignment lies not in the worship exerpience, but in the cultural event.

Be sure to include in your report the date on which you “became a foreigner.” It must be done after the semester has started (thus, you should not report on an experience you had two years ago!) 4. Exams. There will be two exams, including the final. Study guides will be handed out on review days. 5. Supplementary ethnographic readings Read one of the chapters in the following books that is an ethnographic description. Write a paragraph summary and/or reflection on the chapter. Be sure to give bibliographic data (author of chapter, chapter title, name of book, publisher and date). Purpose of assignment is to illustrate in real-life societal terms the material being read in the textbooks. Sources on 1-day reserve in SNU library Angeloni, Elvio. 6. Interview a non-U.S. citizen or a member of an ethnic group whose culture is quite different from your own.. Report your interview in a 2-page paper, responding to questions such as: What have they been the most surprised about in my culture? How do they think they are most misunderstood by members of my culture? What makes them uneasy to be around me? 7. Readings. On reading due dates be sure that you read all the items listed (in most cases, this will be from 3 sources: the two textbooks plus an article that will be handed out in class and/or made available through the course web site). To report your reading, hand in a “double-entry” note sheet on that material. If you did not complete all the reading, please specify what you did read. Sample Double-Entry page Insight, concept, principle

This makes sense /I can use this/This relates to . . . ./Now I know why . . .

Unity between pastor and people

I need to learn ways to unite people to do team building

8. Writing Assignment. Research a topic related to the course content and write a short paper. This should be typed, double-spaced, a minimum of 6 pages long plus a bibliography of sources consulted. On the due date you will give a brief oral summary of your research. 9. Collateral Reading. In addition to the other required reading, read 300 pages of “outside” reading. This syllabus includes a listing of suggested sources.

If you need assistance with a learning or physical disability that may affect your academic progress, I encourage you to contact the Academic Center for Excellence at 491-6694. In addition, specialized services are available for first-generation (neither parent earned a bachelor's degree), low-income, disability, and international students. Students are encouraged to seek assistance from the ACE office for their academic needs.

Graduate Credit Graduate level thinking and reflection will be expected on papers written by those taking the course for graduate credit. In addition, our library has a set of audio tapes on "Anthropological Insights" by Darrell Whiteman. There were lectures given at a Nazarene missionaries' workshop. Listening to and writing reports on these audio lectures is required of students taking the course for graduate credit.
