ARTISTS IN RESIDEN objectives Residency programmes have proven their worth in strengthening networking between international artists and the Austrian arts scene. They promote the development of contemporary art, support artist mobility and facilitate intercultural exchange. The Austrian Federal Chancellery, in cooperation with KKA, makes residency programmes in Vienna available to artists and other cultural professionals all over the world. The scholarships awarded within the framework of the Artists in Residence programmes are funded by the Austrian Federal Chancellery; KKA provides advisory and organisational support. In its work, KKA takes into account relevant developments and discourses at European level. The scholarship winners profit from KKA’s networking with TRADUKI, a European network for literature and books, as well as from KKA’s membership in Res Artis, the global network of residency programmes for artists.
The programme is intended to give international artists an opportunity to work in the Austrian environment, engage in an exchange of experiences and find new sources of inspiration. The programme places a strong focus on networking between the international scholarship winners and the Austrian arts scene. The Artists in Residence programme also has the objective of raising interest within Austria in the cultural and intellectual life of other countries and stimulating discussion and exchange.

EDUCATIONAL objectives On behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and Women’s Affairs, the department of educational Cooperation at KKA promotes exchange and cooperation between educational institutions in Eastern and South Eastern Europe and Austria in order to support sustainable education reforms at the pre-university level. The projects are implemented through five project offices located in Chișinău, Odessa, St. Petersburg, Sarajevo (responsible for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia) and Tirana (responsible for Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia), which are headed by Austrian educational coordinators. KKA’s project partners include the respective ministries responsible for education and training at the preuniversity level, education agencies, teacher training institutions, regional education administrations, schools and other relevant stakeholders in KKA’s partner countries and in Austria. In addition, KKA supports the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and Women’s Affairs in implementing mobility programmes within the context of the Ministry’s Service Centre for International Mobility Programmes and in the coordination of Priority Area 9 of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, »Investing in People and Skills«.
KKA promotes innovative forms of peer learning within and between education systems to promote targeted change management. The thematic focuses of KKA are oriented on common priorities at the interface between national education developments and those at EU level. A priority area in this context is vocational education and training. Multilingualism and diversity are continually increasing at Austrian schools. KKA promotes dialogue and cooperation between educational institutions in Austria and the main countries of origin of children with migration backgrounds.

CULTURAL EDUCATION objectives On behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education and Women’s Affairs, the department of Cultural Education at KKA works at the interface of schools, the arts and culture. In this context, participative cultural education projects and activities with schools throughout Austria are conceived, promoted, and given advisory and organisational support. KKA’s work in this field is based on the central principle that children and young people should be encouraged to participate actively in artistic and cultural processes, taking the circumstances of their own lives as a point of departure. The projects are carried out in cooperation with artists and cultural professionals as well as with artistic and cultural institutions. Engaging in direct encounters with artists gives children and young people new ways of accessing and involving themselves in the arts and culture and is thus an important precondition for participation in the processes of society. Alongside KKA’s cultural education activities in Austria, exchange and networking in this field at European level constitute a further thematic focus.
With its cultural education programmes and its large network of cooperation partners, KKA promotes the active involvement of children and young people in various forms of contemporary art and culture. The objective is to promote active participation in the arts and culture on as broad a basis as possible, as well as a constructive approach to dealing with diversity and difference in society. KKA supports collective and individual learning and teaching processes of pupils, teachers, artists and cultural educators, also in terms of a new learning culture at schools. The quality and sustainability of communication between cultural institutions, artists and young people are a central focus. Other important aspects are European developments in and discourses on cultural education.
