Current development of Android-based location-based system in Indonesia Hari Ginardi Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember

Abstract Indonesia has a specific statistic on how people access and use the internet. Currently, mobile internet using smartphone or mobile modem has a much higher market share than fixed-line (home) internet. Since bandwidth is limited, video sharing and photo sharing are not so popular in Indonesian internet activity; text-based micro blogging and social network are the most popular internet activities. The statistic from May 2011 shows that Indonesia is the 2nd largest Facebook user in the world, and 4th largest twitter user in the world. Location based service in Indonesia is initiated with sms-based application, for example in Mount Merapi disaster relief (2006). This LBS-service is voluntarily coordinated, without using the map interface, and the collected information are not stored. The fast growing of smartphone usage in Indonesia and a better availability of internet bandwidth makes the usage of the Indonesian-based LBS service grows significantly, for example: Koprol, the Indonesian LBS application similar with Foursquare. The development in this area including the Android based hazard mapping which supports the information, evacuation plan and relief of the natural disaster. Other development in Android based LBS in Indonesia including path finding using the ant colony algorithm and train position tracking to improve the railway safety. This work on progress paper explains the current methods which are used in various LBS development in Indonesia.
