NNS to Offer HRT
NNS Whistle Blow Scheduled for 9 a.m. on June 20 in Honor of USS Enterprise’s Arrival to NNS
“Go Passes”
Beginning in July, Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) will begin providing a FREE, one-year “Go Pass” to a limited number of employees. The “Go Pass” is intended to make the commute to work less costly and more convenient for shipbuilders. The pass will be valid on all HRT buses, the Tide, VB Waves and HRT ferry routes and must be used at least five times per month.

“Newport News Shipbuilding has and continues to look into ideas that will improve the parking situation for its shipbuilders,” said Bill Bell, vice president of Human Resources and Administration. “The HRT ‘Go Pass’ is just one of many initiatives the company is investing in to improve the work life and commuting experience. Other initiatives include the NNS park-and-ride shuttle service that transports employees from the Hidens lot on 63rd Street to the North Yard and 50th Street gates, and the shuttle service from the Bldg. 903 parking garage to the 50th Street gate.” Depending on the level of interest, the “Go Passes” will be distributed on a firstcome first-serve basis or by lottery in July. Employees interested in signing up for this program, should complete a NNS/HRT program form and return it to Ann Willis (O67) in Bldg. 78-1 by June 19. Forms are also available from supervisors and foreman on the waterfront. For questions, contact Ann Willis (O67) at 688-3094.

Apprentice School’s Memorial Mural Revitalized The Apprentice School’s Memorial Mural, painted after World War II to honor fallen apprentices, will undergo restoration at The Mariners’ Museum before moving to the school’s new facility this fall. The multi-panel mural was painted by the shipyard’s in-house artist Thomas C. Skinner.

Hanger Shop Shipbuilders Recognized First- and second- shift shipbuilders in the Hanger Shop, along with key value stream departments, were recognized by leadership in May for significantly reducing the number of accidents and delivering superior business results thus far in 2013. During the lunchtime celebration, Andy Green, vice president of Component Fabrication and Assembly (CFA), congratulated the team on their accomplishments. “Working together, the Hanger Value Stream is delivering superior business results, by delivering on-time, achieving first class quality, at a reduced cost, while emphasizing safety,” he said. “This shop has
demonstrated what an engaged team can accomplish.” Some of the key accomplishments the team has achieved this year include: • Reduced man hours by 21,185. • Increased the number of “on-time completes” from 65 to 85 percent. • Reduced delinquencies 88 percent. • On-track to reduce accidents by 70 percent this year.
Shipbuilder Steering the Way Joe Donovan (O67) is a waterfront instructor responsible for initial training, requalification and refresher training of nuclear work skills. He is currently part of Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) USS Enterprise (CVN 65) inactivation team and has been working on CVN 65 since January 17, 2013. “This is my first assignment on ‘Big E,’” said Donovan. “I’m here to provide success to the mechanics on the deckplate and to provide open communication for mechanics about requirements regarding NNS’ nuclear procedures and processes as we train.” As a training representative, Donovan has interacted with all groups on the ship and claims it has helped them stay engaged with one another. “I use the ‘Commitment Card’ on a daily basis,” he said. “The 12 commitments listed on the card are very important. Number eight is especially important for me. In my job, I have the opportunity to inspire many people - and when people enjoy what they do, they do it better. I think our customers are seeing the results of these commitments.” The “12 Commitments” of the Carrier Inactivation Program. Each shipbuilder in the program carries around a card with these commitments listed on it to remind them of the program’s commitments on a daily basis.

NNS Wins “The Yard” Competition Continued from p. 1 ...to determine which Hampton Roads shipyard would win bragging rights to be called “The Yard” this year. Each team had one hour to build a vessel out of cardboard and duct tape. Vessels were judged on three criteria: best resemblance to a naval vessel, vessel with the least amount of duct tape on display and the vessel that could hold the most weight for 10 seconds without sinking. Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) team won first place in all three categories and also scored five bonus points for successfully placing a human and additional weights on their vessel. The NNS vessel held 344 pounds before sinking. “There is not enough praise for how well this team performed during the competition,” said NNS Team Captain Stiles Bliss (E25). “Every member went above and beyond to make this endeavor a success. We put an awesome team together this year that embodied what our shipyard is all about.” Congratulations to the 2013 NNS team: Captain Stiles Bliss (E25), Melynda Roberts (M53), Kevin Miller (M72), Darryl Trautner (M72), Michael Nyberg (X10), Dasha Nyberg, Mike Yankanwich (X36), Kevin Doyle (X06), Mayranne Brock (O38), Matthew Wright (E83) and Corrie Wright (X43).
NNS Volunteers Float Local School to LEGO Victory “Team Nautical Shadows” (TNS) comprised of seventh and eighth grade students from Warwick River Christian School took home to first place prize in the 2013 Virginia Ship Repair Association’s 7th Annual Ship Repair Industry Awareness Lego Competition in June. Without the shipbuilding and repair industry technical advisor and mentor normally partnered with the teams, TNS relied on the expertise of Newport News Shipbuilding volunteers Billy Byrd (E18), Ben Williamson (E86) and Danni Clark (E13) to create a presentation and a graded 800 word essay and submarine design. The purpose of the annual competition is to promote awareness of the ship repair industry while increasing mathematical, analytical and conceptual skills to students. Teams are required to use LEGO Digital Designer to design a ship or a portion of a ship that is often repaired in Hampton Roads, including an innovation that would improve the ship or add beneficial enhancements. The design had to be an accurate representation and be capable of being constructed in LEGOS for under $500. TNS’ submission won first place out of six competing teams in the preliminaries at The Mariners’ Museum on March 28 and won first place out of the top five teams competing in the finals at Nauticus on April 29.
REMINDER: Changes to Short- and Long-Term Disability Effective July 1, 2013, Huntington Ingalls Industries is transferring the administration of the Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD) plans for eligible salaried employees from Unum to Prudential. This provider change will not impact employees on STD and LTD with a date of disability prior to July 1, 2013. As a reminder, all eligible salaried employees must first contact the Leave of Absence (LOA) Administration Department (K24) at 688-3800 to request a medical leave of absence and initiate the claim process. Additionally, payment of disability benefits due to the birth of a child may require additional medical documentation to support absences longer than six weeks from the date of birth. Contact the LOA department for more information.
Shipbuilder’s Idea Improves Efficiency of PC Refreshes System Analyst Bob Pelletier (T54) was recently presented with an Opportunity for Improvement (OFI) award for his innovative idea to improve the company’s lengthy laptop and personal computer (PC) refresh process. “My idea was to streamline computer refreshes by coping user data to a shared area during an upgrade,” said Pelletier. “This concept eliminated the time spent on finding, moving and restoring data. Following the upgrade, user data was able to be restored back to the PC/laptop. Pelletier’s OFI is currently in use at Newport News Shipbuilding. To date, the company has saved approximately $300,000, which reduced the hours required to find a location to store user data; eliminating the need for the user to find his/her data and decide where to put it while upgrading; and finally, copying the data back to the refresh laptop/PC.

NNS Recognizes LGBT Month Newport News Shipbuilding recognizes June as the nationally proclaimed month to celebrate lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) Pride. Until recently, Pride days for individuals who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) were celebrated at many different times all over the U.S. The most significant date in LGBT history occurring in June was the three-day protest in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, an event that marked the first time that the gay community joined together to fight for its rights, thereby gaining national attention. The anniversary of this event was one of the reasons June was chosen as the nationally proclaimed month to celebrate LGBT Pride.
