Career Pathways Offers Internships for Teachers Twenty-three educators from public schools throughout southeastern Virginia are participating in a teacher internship July 9 - Aug. 10 through Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) Career Pathways program. The program, specifically designed for teachers and counselors, is a full-time internship that allows selected middle and high school educators to gain insight in NNS’ different programs and trades by experiencing what craftsman such as welders, pipefitters and electricians do to build and maintain Navy ships. Following the completion of the internship, the educators will be able to incorporate their new knowledge into future lesson plans to help Aug. 6 - 10, 2012

students prepare for careers in shipbuilding, manufacturing and other STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields. “Our partnership with the local school systems is an essential tool in educating the community on the lasting career opportunities we have here,” said George Decker, director of NNS Talent Acquisition. “At NNS, we build careers as well as great ships.” View a video about the Career Pathways program. Form Eliminations Improve Material Processes On Aug. 2, Material Engineering and Supply Chain held a “retirement celebration” for several administrative forms that added potential cost and delay to suppliers and ultimately impeded the flow of material to the deck plate. Tim Sweitzer, director of Material Engineering, quoted Milwaukee Valve Marine Manager Julie Olson who said, “You have obviously removed a very repetitive and time consuming effort. Kudos for taking on the paperwork monster.” Eliminating these forms will avoid thousands of transactions each year; thus, speeding up the process. “For years, suppliers have been giving us suggestions for improvement,” said Alma Fallon, director of Supply

Chain Procurement. “Now they are seeing that we are serious about helping them succeed, which ultimately benefits our shipbuilders.”

Boykin Featured as OWE Guest Speaker More than 130 women and men attended the Outstanding Women’s Exchange (OWE) conference on July 13 at the Virginia Peninsula Association of Realtors in Hampton. The event brought a panel of four women executives together to discuss their “Feminine Edge in a Masculine World.” Jennifer Boykin, vice president of Engineering and Design, was one of the guest speakers. Other speakers included: Debra Flores, president and administrator of Sentara CarePlex, Liz Moore, president of Liz Moore and Associates, and Mayor Molly Ward, City of Hampton. Front row (L to R): Jennifer Boykin, vice president of Engineering and Design, and Britta Brown Zambrana (K93). As a reminder, the Navy parking lot located at 50th Street and Warwick Boulevard is open for all employees, contractors and leased employees. There is ample parking available and parking decals are not required in this lot. Shipyard vans marked “NNS Parking Lot Shuttle” will transport shipbuilders to and from the 50th Street lot from 5-8 a.m. and 2-5 p.m. stopping at the North Yard Gate and the gate at 50th Street and Washington Avenue.

Shipbuilder Steering the Way On July 12, Apprentice Dwayne Roes (M53) was presented with a “Machine Shop On-The-Spot” recognition and a special coin from Machine Shop Superintendent Joey Perry for recognizing a faint linear crack on a submarine rod. Roes immediately stopped work when he noticed the crack and contacted his instructor. “By Dwayne speaking up and being heard by his leadership, a potential malfunction with that part failing on the submarine after installment due to those linear cracks, was obverted,” said Quality Manager John W. Parker, Jr.
