DairySA update DairySA delivers farmer-driven projects across SA covering many aspects of dairy farm business operation and industry development. Chairperson Michael Connor provides an update on the latest activities and plans for the year ahead.

Dairy Australia update What are the current challenges facing Dairy Australia? What are the recent successes? Ian Halliday, Managing Director, will provide an insight into Dairy Australia’s focus and what’s happening in dairy both nationally and internationally.

Laser Assisted Milk Testing: An SA initiative The Dairy Explorer Project, Jacob Thomas, Technology Leader, Availer Like something out of a Sci-fi movie, the ‘Dairy Explorer Project’ has the potential to change the way we dairy. By commercialising a real-time fat, protein and somatic cell count solution, the focus of the project is to provide farmers with data-points to monitor and manage cows in real-time on a per cow basis to maximise milk quality, farmer-paid pricing, and optimise animal welfare and nutrition. Discover how significant data insights will optimise your herd and production management in the future.

‘But what does it mean for me?’ Nathan Scott, Technology Leader, Achieve Ag All this technology talk is great - but what factors should we consider before using it on farm? Will it change the essentials of dairyfarming? Nathan will question what technology means in a ‘real-life’ setting - and reassure us that the raft of technology at our fingertips is just another (exciting!) tool that can be used to help make decisions on farm.

‘Success through people : getting it right the first time’ Mandy Johnson, Best-selling business author, Director, Insight On-Site It’s no secret that ‘people practices’ are now vital to your organisation’s success. But what are the hidden motivators that attract the best employees? Mandy will reveal the secret weapons to great recruitment, and explain how to build a remarkable workplace that employees never want to leave. With real-life examples of successful innovative strategies used by dairy farmers across the country, this session will equip your ‘people toolkit’ with all the right gear.

‘Looking at milk through night vision goggles’ Michelle Axford, Genetic Evaluation Manager, DataGene Milk and night vision goggles – how are they connected? MIR is a technology that passes a light beam through a milk sample to measure certain components. From its early ability to calculate milk fat and protein content, new research shows that it has the potential to indicate a cow’s status for energy balance, fertility, health, methane emissions and feed efficiency. What will this mean for dairying in the future, and how will farmers benefit? Together with the latest updates on DataGene projects, this session will get you excited about the latest developments in dairy technology.

‘Taking the ‘scary’ out of change’ Judy Wilkinson, Farm Family Facilitator What does change mean to you? Change is inevitable in life, and managing change in dairy farms can be one of the most challenging journeys of all. Judy will show you the path to communicating change effectively – with family, staff and extended networks – and will highlight potential opportunities that come with change. After all, change doesn’t have to be scary… it could be the start of something new and exciting!

‘Unpacking TMR and PMR – the Real Story’ Laura Tweddle, Consulting Nutritionist, Debenham Australia What are the advantages of each of these dairy systems? What are the pitfalls? Laura will take a closer look at herd nutrition management in TMR and PMR Dairy Systems and discuss methods to help maximise your productivity and fertility through rumen fill management.

‘Turn the Table’ Q&A Session with Presenters Headed up by a panel comprised of the day’s presenters, this is your chance to ask the hard questions and stimulate discussion. Simply text your questions throughout the day and they will be addressed by the Panel during this session. It’s your turn – get involved!

Finish off the day in the Top Paddock Join the DairySA Board and team, speakers and sponsors to review the day’s topics and enjoy the company of other delegates over nibbles and drinks.

NOTE: Topics and speakers are subject to change prior to the day

In the evening The DairySA Central Conference Dinner provides an ideal opportunity to catch up with friends, farmers and the broader industry network. Be inspired by Kym Masters, Section28 Artisan Cheeses, as he takes us on his journey – where he’s been, the beginning of Section28 and the path for the future. Additional dinner tickets are available for partners, family, friends, employees and other community members to attend.

Next Gen Challenge The DairySA Next Gen Challenge is for young people in the dairy industry who are ready to step up and make an impact in their business, community or the industry. The semi-finalists of the Next Gen Challenge will be announced, which will see them undertake their journey to the finals – with the winner receiving a $2000 bursary!
