David Gemmell Swords of Night and Day A thousand years after they fell in battle, two heroes-Druss and Skilgannon-are revered throughout the war-torn lands of the Drenai. Yet men and women live in abject fear of the Joinings, abominable meldings of man and beast, and of their mistress, the dark sorceress known as the Eternal. None can stave off these ruthless foes. But what if the soul of one such hero could be called back from the void, his bones housed again in flesh? An ancient prophecy foretold that Skilgannon would return in his people's darkest hour. To most, this is a foolish hope. But not so to Landis Kan. For years, as the power of the Eternal grew, Kan

searched for the tomb of Skilgannon the Damned. And at last, he found it, gathering up the bones and performing the mystic ritual. But the reborn hero is an enigma: a young man whose warrior skills are blunted and whose memories are fragmented. This Skilgannon is a man out of time, marooned in a world as strange to him as a dream, remote from all he knew and loved. Or nearly all. Before bringing Skilgannon back, Landis Kan had experimented upon other bone fragments found in the hero's tomb. That ritual resulted in a surly giant who possessed astounding strength, but no memories. To Kan, he is a dangerous failure. To Skilgannon, this giant represents their last hope. As the ageless evil of the Eternal threatens to drown the Drenai lands in blood, two legendary heroes will once again lead the way to freedom.

Jacqueline Carey Kushiel’s Avatar The triumphant conclusion to this stellar trilogy set in Terra d'Ange. The land of Terra d'Ange is a place of unsurpassed beauty and grace. It's inhabited by the race that rose from the seed of angels, and they live by one simple truth: Love as Thou Wilt. Phedre no Delauney's path has been strange and dangerous. She has lain with princes and pirate kings, battled a wicked temptress and saved two nations. Through it all, her faithful companion Jocelin has been by her side, following the central pledge: Protect and Serve. But this pledge will be put to the test. The search for her childhood friend Hyacinthe, will take Phedre and Jocelin across the world - to a power so intense and mysterious, no one dare speak its name.

David Weber & John Ringo March to the Stars Roger Ramius Sergei Alexander Chiang MacClintock has had a really bad year. Bad enough to be the spoiled rotten fop of a prince no one wanted or trusted. Worse to be sent off on a meaningless diplomatic mission, simply to get you out from underfoot, with a bodyguard of Marines who loathe and despise you. Worse yet to be assumed dead and marooned for almost a year on a hell-hole planet while you and those same Marines fight your way through carnivorous beasts, murderous natives, and perpetual rain to the only starport. . . which is controlled by the Empire's worst enemies. Worst of all to have discovered that you were born to be a warrior prince. One whose bodyguards have learned the same lesson. And one haunted by the deaths of almost a hundred of

your Marines... for what you know now was an unnecessary exercise in political expediency. A warrior prince who wants to have a few choice words with your Lady Mother, the Empress of Man. But to have them, you, your surviving Marines, and your Mardukan allies must cross a demon-haunted ocean, face a civilization that is "civilized" in name alone and "barbarians" who may not be exactly what they seem, and once again battle against impossible odds. All so that you can attempt to somehow seize a heavily defended spaceport and hijack a starship to take you home. Yet what neither Roger, nor the Marines, nor his allies know is that the battle to leave Marduk is only the beginning. And that words with Roger's mother will be hard to come by. But that's all right. Because what the Galaxy doesn't know is that it's about to receive a fresh proof of an old truism: You don't mess with a MacClintock.

Crusade completes the Aquasilva trilogy, whish has seen Cathan come of age in more ways that one. With deep politics, world builing and characterisation, this book will grip you. PB $18.95 Quick Review by Dan I really enjoyed this book with its grand scale reminiscent of Dune. In this final instalment of the series the war between the Domain and the followers of the other branches of religion and magic reaches its conclusion. The story is well told, the characters are believable and the plotline well thought out, without being overly preachy. I’d enjoy reading more set in this world or universe.

Dan Brown The Da Vinci Code PB $21.95 Reviewed by Penny Symbologist Robert Langdon is called to a curious murder scene in the Louvre Museum not only as a consultant but also as chief suspect. Within minutes of his arrival he is on the run with the victim’s cryptologist granddaughter and engaged in trying to solve a treasure hunt that holds the secret to one of humanity’s oldest quests. The Da Vinci Code is a fast paced thriller that has a singular challenge – to resist the urgency of the storytelling and slow your reading down enough to absorb the details of the riddle and the history that surrounds it. The conflict that becomes personal for Langdon is between two organizations. The first is the ultra conservative (and actual) Opus Dei, a highly influential Catholic body that has a vested interest in the status quo, and the even more mysterious group – The Priory of Sion - so secretive that even the senior office bearers are barely known to each other. Brown skillfully makes the history of both organizations integral to the solution to the puzzle, and in doing so entwines rich historical detail, academic speculation and non-stop action. With Gibson’s Passion of Christ out as the latest interpretation of the ‘definitive’ gospel story, it is interesting to read something around the same subject that questions the nature of history itself, and the authority of those who decide what history is. However Brown is not a conspiracy fearing radical, but the trail of alternatives he uncovers makes for fascinating reading, and is a great starting point for further investigation. The DaVinci Code Online Bonus Random House has two online quizzes related to The Da Vinci Code – one based on the American cover (they have a copy to refer to on the site), the other a challenging web quest designed by Dan Brown. I did the web quest – it was fun and I only cheated (noticeboards are useful things!) once….if get started and really stuck send an email to Infinitas and I’ll help you along….you’ll find both at www.randomhouse.com/doubleday/davin ci (the web quest option is at the bottom of the screen once you have started the cover code cracking).

David & Leigh Eddings The Elder Gods The Dreamers have the power to change the world with their dreams, they are sleeping gods. Four are awake and four asleep for alternating periods of 25,000 years. The moment at which they wake they are vulnerable and the Lord of the Wasteland knows it. TP $29.95 Review by David Review copies have strange covers, and a reviewing neophyte can fail to notice little details like the authors' names. I haven't read much David Eddings (or any Leigh) so I apologise in advance for where I reveal my ignorance of their oeuvre. Stylistically it won't be a huge surprise. I'm not a fan of David Eddings' writing style, but many are and if you're one of them then you'll probably find The Elder Gods quite acceptable. The subject matter, though, seems to be something of a departure. Its nearest living relatives include Zelazney's Amber series and Brust's To Reign in Heaven. Nations of mortals are drafted into a war by deities of impressive magical power, overwhelming personal magnetism, limited intelligence and minimal common sense. A child goddess, for instance, charms warriors into obeying her commands. It's obvious what harm her power could do in the wrong hands, and entirely plausible to the reader that her hands are, in the long run, just that. This adds some moral ambiguity to a storyline that's otherwise pretty much good guys versus bad guys. If you've liked other Eddings work, but felt the need of themes and plots less generic, then The Elder Gods is probably for you.

Stephen Donaldson has commenced work on the Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, a four book series, with Runes of Earth due late 2004. Film rights to the entire series have been optioned.

David Farland’s Runelords books are coming to a big screen near you. The trilogy of movies is due to start filming in Prague in mid 2004.

J D Robb’s In Death series has been optioned by Fox 2000 for Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey’s Icon Productions for a full length feature film. Books 18 (Divided in Death, see new release listing) and 19 in the series are due for release this year.

Stephen King’s latest television series, Kingdom Hospital, which debuted in March on the American ABC to lacklustre ratings, has had further disappointment, with continuing downbeat ratings results.

First actor named for the Earthsea miniseries, to be produced by the Sci-Fi Channel, is Isabella Rossellini, who will be playing High Priestess Thar.

Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series has been optioned by Red Eagle Entertainment. Apparently the plan is to start with a screenplay for Eye of the World, and then continue on with the franchise should it prove successful. Jordan currently states that there will be at least 12 novels (excluding prequels) in the series.

After the success of the recent miniseries, the Sci-Fi Channel has commissioned 13 episodes for a new series of Battlestar Galactica. All the principle cast from the miniseries have joined the show.

Joss Whedon’s latest production will be the big screen debut for Firefly, the ill-fated science fiction show. Following the successful US DVD release, Universal Pictures announced on March 3rd that they will produce Serenity. The movie will feature all the original cast and will pick up where the show left off, but be written so that newcomers won’t be wondering what they’ve missed.

Doctor Who The new Doctor Who has been announced… Christopher Eccleston has starred in a number of films including ExistenZ, Gone in 60 Seconds, Let Him Have It and Shallow Grave The writing team for the new Doctor Who series has just been announced: Mark Gatiss (creator of The League Of Gentlemen), Steven Moffat (Coupling), Paul Cornell (Doctor Who author) and Rob Shearman (another Who author), the team is being led by Russell T. Davies. The Who team is currently in talks which may allow fan favourites, the Daleks, to return with the new show! And in more Who related news, the fourth Doctor, Tom Baker, will be moving in to Glenbogle, in the new series of Monarch of the Glen, as Archie’s offbeat uncle.

H G Wells’ War of The Worlds is set to hit the big screen too. Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise have announced plans to make a new movie of the classic story, with Cruise likely to produce and star in it.

In a recent online chat as part of World Book Day, J K Rowling speculated that there might be stories about the Harry Potter crew after their Hogwarts graduation. She has always stated previously that there will only be 7 books. She also stated that book six is well underway, but there is no release date yet, as it is not complete and the date would be up to her publishers to decide.

This year’s Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Award from the Science Fiction Writers of America has been given to Robert Silverberg.

Paizo Publishing announced that it will resurrect the classic pulp magazine Amazing Stories in July. The magazine, which was first published in 1926, will be relaunched as a monthly magazine with both cutting-edge fiction from top authors and coverage of the entire spectrum of SF, fantasy, superheroes and supernatural horror, the publisher said. The first issue of Amazing Stories this century will run 84 pages and carry a cover price of $5.99 (US). Dave Gross, editor-in-chief of Star Wars Insider, will also helm Amazing Stories.

Star Wars fans can cheer, the latest news has the classic trilogy of Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, set to be released on DVD at last. The movies are set to be released as a box set only, including a fourth disc of special features, on September 21st in the States, will local release to follow before Christmas. All films will be presented in digitally remastered formats with state of the art picture and sound quality. The one gripe that might occur though, is that it seems that Star Wars: A New Hope is most likely to be the director’s cut, and not the original release of the movie.
