_______________________________________________________________________________________ Dear Contractor, We are interesting in engaging your services. If you can give us an answer to our dilemma, we will make it worthwhile for you. I am the director of Mt. Tsouris ski area and we wish to choose a site for our new ski lift. The possible sites for the base of the ski lift must be between points A and B inclusive on the diagram below. The angle of elevation from the base of the first site (A) to the top of the mountain is 33o. The last possible site (B) is 800 feet closer to the base of the mountain and the angle of elevation from this site is 35o. The other possible sites are at angles of elevation 33.5o, 34o, and 34.5o.

At an angle of elevation of 33o, the ski lift will be able to travel at 5 mph. Each additional degree of elevation above 33o causes a decrease in the speed of .125 mph. 2 degrees of additional elevation would cause a decrease in the speed of .25 mph, etc. We wish to build the ski lift so that our skiers will have the fastest route to the top of the mountain. At what angle of elevation should we build the lift? We would appreciate if you can analyze the situation and recommend a solution. Of course, you will need to defend your solution with your reasoning and calculations. Feel free to include a graph or chart if that will help, but be sure you summarize your solution and that it is clear. Your solution must be in my hands a week from today. Thank you. Mr. S. Schwartz Director, Mt. Tsouris Ski Area P.S. If you can supply us with an angle of elevation between 33o and 35o, but not tied to 33.5o, 34o, or 34.5o, it will be worth more to you when we negotiate a price for your services.
