Dec 3, 2005 ... in town open and available to all, the library is a place ... Show that you are an early supporter by ... Judith McNaught, Every Breath You Take.
Weeks Public Library Bulletin The NEW Weeks Public Library This March, at town meeting, the people of Greenland will be able to vote to authorize a 7,000 square foot addition to the Weeks Public Library. The one service in town open and available to all, the library is a place of learning, entertainment and community, where young and old alike come to enrich their lives and strengthen their minds. But the library is also increasingly inadequate physically to support these functions. Venerable at 108, the library is ready for expansion. It is time to bring the library forward into the 21st Century. Currently a mere 2,700 square feet, it is hardly big enough to house a minimal collection, with little space left over for the more than 200 programs the libraries offer every year, activities, or even comfortable reading. A doubling of library usage over just the last four years highlights the need for more space in ever clearer ways. (continued on p. 5)

It’s Time to Join or Renew!

The Friends of the Weeks Public Library The Friends of the Library are responsible for many of the things that make the library such a special place. The Friends fund many of the museum passes we offer, the summer reading program, and our book rental program which allows us to have multiple copies of popular books to keep wait lists short. The Friends also offer holiday celebrations such as this month’s Christmas Party. Your membership makes these efforts possible, as well as showing your support for the library’s direction. Won’t you stand up and be counted with these people’s efforts?

Membership form is on p. 5

In This Issue: Reserve December and January Hot New Releases! p. 2

The first visible signs of the building project are the TShirts printed with a picture of the new library, the uniform of the new library’s “Catalyst Club” which will help to fund planning and design, as well as publicity and outreach. Show that you are an early supporter by donating $100 to the library building fund and wearing your New Library T-Shirt with pride! Make your taxdeductible check out to the Weeks Public Library Building Fund and drop it off at the library.

BUILDING BUILDING GREENLAND'S "TOMORROW" COMMUNITY MEETING, FEBRUARY 33-4, 2006 comcom-mumu-nini-ty a. b. c. d.

A group of people living in the same locality and under the same government. The district or locality in which such a group lives. Similarity Similarity or identity: a community of interests. Sharing, participation, and fellowship.

Here are some of the first definitions of "community" you’ll find when Googling the concept on your computer. Here, as well, we think you'll agree, is a case where C's and D's are much, much better than A's and B's. If you are in that growing class of people who live where you live because of your job or your house or the lot on which it sits but long for a deeper sense of belonging, our gathering on February 3 and 4 (storm dates, February 10 and 11) is for you. If you are already actively involved in the school but want to extend your connection to Greenland beyond the fact that your children -- at present -- are young, this gathering is for you. If you care about local history, and think the past always does, and always should, inform the present, you should put these dates on your calendar. If you want to do your part to help Greenland grow in a coherent and directed fashion to balance open space (and rural character) with development (and a healthy tax base), you should come and participate in its planning. Citizens of Greenland, you have no excuses! We are making this very easy for you. We're giving you two months' notice, free meals, free babysitting, and even the opportunity to win a raffle prize simply by attending the workshops! Please mark your calendars and start thinking about making Greenland an even better place to call home. You just may hold the missing piece that pulls this puzzle of living all together. Location: Greenland Central School Professional Partner: UNH Cooperative Extension Dates, Times, Treats and Topics: 3 February, about 5:30 p.m.: dinner, slide slow of historical Greenland, preliminary discussions 4 February, around 8:00 a.m - 2:00 p.m.: breakfast, snacks, lunch, work sessions on specific community interests (pick your topic!) (storm dates February 10th and 11th) Come one, come all! And come early! The Steering Committee's next meeting will be on December 7, at 7:00 p.m. in Greenland Central School's Room 101. Please join us if you'd like to help shape our future not only by participating in the workshops but also by helping us finish the planning for this event or by volunteering to serve as a facilitator for one of the discussions. December, 2005 Cut Here

The NEW Weeks Public Library, cont. from p1 Basically unchanged since its construction in the late 1800s, the library is not only dramatically out of compliance with all current laws and standards of accessibility, but with retro-fitted electricity and computer wiring, it is dangerously ill-suited to new technologies. Water and mold problems plague the basement children’s room. The basement stairs are a challenge to the most fit; they are a complete barrier to anyone with physical challenges. The addition will allow the library to increase its collection, move the children's room out of the basement, and provide space dedicated for teenagers, programs, public meetings, and quiet and uninterrupted reading. It will be accessible to all.

Friends of the the Weeks Public Library Meeting Tuesday, Dec. 6, 6:30pm Come to help plan Friends activities for the coming year!

Knit and Purl Wednesday, December 7, 7pm Our knitting fun continues. Bring a project in progress or start a new one. All ages welcome.

Friday Flicks Friday afternoons at 2pm, perfect for an after school wind-down, featuring new release family movies. Now on our new projection screen. Come by see it! (Popcorn included, of course.)
