Preface

This book contains extended and revised versions of a set of selected papers from the EWG-DSS workshops held in London and Paris, in June and in November 2011, respectively. These workshops were organized by the Euro Working Group on Decision Support Systems (EWG-DSS) and partially sponsored by the Association of European Operational Research Societies (EURO), in cooperation with the Management School University of Liverpool (ULMS) in the UK; the University of Toulouse, the Institute of Research in Informatics of Toulouse (IRIT) in France; the UNINOVA - CA3 - Computational Intelligence Research Group in Portugal; the School of Management, University of Plymouth in the UK; the company SimTech Simulation Technology in Austria; the Institute of Logic and Theory of Science (ILTC), Brazil; the University of Belgrade in Serbia; the School of Business, Economics and Informatics at Birkbeck, University of London in the UK; the Paris-Dauphine University in France; the Laboratoire d’Analyse et Mod´elisation de Syst`emes pour l’Aide a` la DEcision (LAMSADE) in France and the Decision Analysis Special Interest Group of the British OR Society (DASIG). The purposes of the London and Paris 2011 EWG-DSS workshops were to bring together academics, researchers, practitioners, and enterprises interested in implementing collaborative perspectives for different kinds of environments. The workshops themes were “Decision Support Systems” and “Collaborative Decision Making,” respectively. Hence, the scientific areas of interest for selected contributions from these two outstanding workshops were: (a) distributed group support systems; (b) collaborative decision making; (c) supply chain management; (d) information technologies; and (e) simulation. In addition, since effective collaboration leads to collaborative advantages and also to a better partnership performance, the proper understanding and visualization is to be supported by considering different perspectives of collaborations in real environments. In this context, the London and Paris 2011 EWG-DSS workshops’ selected papers are representative of the current research activities in the area of decision support systems and addresses these challenges by considering a large number of research topics: from more static and abstract ones, such as conceptual models, to more dynamic and technical ones, such as decision support systems and software simulations and specification, from more enterprise-oriented ones, such as business knowledge management process and collaborative specification and requirements to more multi-objective and multi-criteria expert systems to support the different business behaviors in collaborative environments. Both 2011 EWG-DSS workshops, London and Paris, considered 39 and 13 papers for oral presentation each. From the total of 52 papers, 11 papers were selected for publication in this edition by considering their content, structure and presentation quality. This led to a “full-paper” acceptance ratio of 22%,

Preface

and shows the intention of preserving a high-quality forum for the next editions of EWG-DSS workshops. The proceedings selection and publication process was based on a double-blind paper evaluation method: each selected paper was reviewed by at least two internationally known experts from the EWG-DSS Program Committee. The high quality of the London and Paris EWG-DSS workshop programs was enhanced by five keynote lectures, delivered by distinguished guests who are renowned experts in their fields, including (alphabetically): Alex Duffy (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK), Philip Powell (School of Business, Economics and Informatics at Birkbeck, University of London, UK), and Rita Ribeiro (CA3 – Computational Intelligence Research Group at UNINOVA, Portugal) for the London’s workshop, and (alphabetically): Denis Bouyssou (Centre National de Recherche Scientifique in Paris, France) and Sihem Amer-Yahia (Qatar Computing Research Center, Qatar) for the Paris workshop. Their lectures were very interesting and there was a high level of information exchange for further fruitful cooperation among all participants. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all those who contributed to the EWG-DSS workshops activities in 2011, including authors, reviewers, Program Committee members, and institutional sponsors. Finally, we hope you will find the contents useful and interesting to tackle many of the collaborative challenges, in terms of research and practice activities, when addressing any of the related research areas. Euro Working Group on Decision Support Systems

The EWG-DSS is a Working Group on Decision Support Systems within EURO, the Association of the European Operational Research Societies. The main purpose of the EWG-DSS is to establish a platform for encouraging state-of-the-art high quality research and collaboration within the decision support systems (DSS) community. Additional EWG-DSS aims are to: • Encourage the information exchange among practitioners, end-users, and researchers in the area of DSS • Enforce networking among the DSS communities and facilitate activities that are essential for starting up international cooperation research and projects • Facilitate professional academic and industrial opportunities for its members • Favor the development of innovative models, methods, and tools in the field DSS and related areas • Actively promote the interest in DSS in the scientific community by organizing dedicated workshops, seminars, mini-conferences, and conference streams in major conferences, as well as editing special and contributed issues in relevant scientific journals. The EWG-DSS was founded during a memorable EURO Summer Institute on DSS that took place at Madeira, Portugal, in May 1989. This Summer Institute was organized by two well-known academics of the OR community: Jean-Pierre Brans and Jos´e Paix˜ ao. It enjoyed the participation of 24 young researchers of 16 different nationalities. The number of EWG-DSS members has substantially grown along the years. By the end of 2011 we were over 150 registered members, coming from various nationalities. Through the years, quite a few well-qualified research co-operations have been established within the group members, which have generated valuable contributions to the DSS field in journal publications. Since its creation, the EWG-DSS has held annual meetings in various European countries, and has taken active part in the EURO Conferences on decision-making-related subjects. Since the beginning of 2011, the EWG-DSS coordination board has been composed of: Pascale Zarat´e (France), F´ atima Dargam (Austria), Rita Ribeiro (Portugal), Jorge E. Hern´ andez (UK), Boris Delibaˇsi´c (Serbia) and Shaofeng Liu (UK).
