Regulations for the second, third and fourth years of the four year programme are the same as for the B.Sc. degree in Chemistry Years 1, 2, and 3. In order to proceed from Year Zero to Year 1 B.Sc. Chemistry, students must average >40% over the year (Year Zero), must have passed modules CH0041 and CH0070 >40%, and achieved credit (>35%) in the other modules. BSc CHEMISTRY WITH A YEAR ABROAD Regulations for the first, second and fourth years of the course are the same as for the B.Sc. degree in Chemistry. THIRD YEAR MODULES The third-year will be spent abroad in the European Union taking approved courses in one of the institutions associated with the Chemistry Department in an ERASMUS Inter-University Co-operative Programme (ICP) or other exchange programme. Students will be required to reach a prescribed level of attainment in the work done abroad, and the marks for the year will be included in the final degree assessment. BSc CHEMISTRY WITH A YEAR IN INDUSTRY Regulations for the first, second and fourth years of the course are the same as for the B.Sc. degree in Chemistry.

Students will work within the sponsoring company for one year between 1 July of the second year and last week of September of the following year (depending on the exact date for the start of the academic year). During the one-year placement, students will undertake a project which will be agreed by the sponsoring company and the University. Students will be expected to make a presentation on the subject of their project towards the end of their placement. Full consideration will be given to the project and the presentation in assessing the degree. Students will be issued with a ‘Certificate of Industrial Studies’ indicating successful completion of their industrial placement.
MChem CHEMISTRY Note: It is envisaged that in order to continue on to the M.Chem. degree in year 3 students will normally have achieved at least a 2.1 standard at the end of the second year. Students whose overall average is less than 60% will be considered individually. Those achieving lower than 55 % will only be considered in exceptional circumstances. Students who do not achieve the standard required for M.Chem. will be transferred to B.Sc. FIRST AND SECOND YEAR MODULES The first- and second-year modules are the same as for the B.Sc. degree. M.Chem. Year Abroad: Students who choose to spend a year abroad in the USA will spend their third year studying at a partner institution in the USA. In this year they will study modules equivalent to those studied in the third year of the MChem at Leicester. As a result there may be some restrictions on their option choices in the fourth year. Each case will be considered individually. M.Chem. Year Abroad: Students who choose to spend a year abroad in the European Union will spend their third-year studying at a European University and will take modules CH3500, CH3501, CH3502, CH3503and one of CH3504, CH3505 or CH3506 by distance learning and Placement Project CH3551/2/3.
