100% tobeus November 16, 2013 - February 9, 2014 Matteo Ragni is both a designer and a father. Driven by his frustration in seeing his children play with a toy for a few hours and then lose interest, Ragni decided that the best gift he could give them was an object to love: one made of the right material, with a dignified end in recycling or reutilization. Both beautiful and clever, ToBeUs cars are actualized through only two cuts in a consistently sized piece of wood. Ragni gathered the creations of great masters of Italian design and created the 2012 exhibition 100% TobeUs: 100 Designers For 100 New Toy Cars. The DX adds to it a collection of Canadian-designed cars made from home-grown salvaged woods.

this is not a toy: the urban vinyl phenomemon February 10 – May 18, 2014 Lying at the intersection of product and graphic design, marketing and pop culture, urban vinyl toys are part merchandise, part art; the factory-produced embodiment of the same consumer, brand and pop-culture obsessed sentiment expressed by Andy Warhol. These objects satisfy the consumer’s lust for the next big thing, products in limited editions that balance the accessibility of design with the rarity and distinction of art. With its roots in manga and graffiti culture, the designer toy movement is a subversive one; a movement as dark as it is sweet. This is Not a Toy will bring to the forefront the most prolific artists and designers of the urban vinyl genre. Through larger-than-life sculptures and inflatables; interactive installation; and a focus on designer toy history by Magic Pony Toronto; the exhibition will place the viewer in a playland for both young and old. Featuring: KAWS, Kidrobot, Medicom, Frank Kozik, Huck Gee, Coarse and others. Suggested workshops: Intro to Design, Toy Design

september 2013 – May 2014 This session introduces students to the world of design by using an everyday item, the chair, as a case in point. Students are shown images of the Design Exchange’s rich collection of chairs and discuss form and function in exploring design concerns including materials, ergonomics, and scale. Students also learn how discussing the design of a chair can reflect the social and political landscape from which it was created. Leading Canadian industrial designers from both past and present are highlighted. Finally, students learn to think like designers themselves as they work through a hands-on design challenge.
