ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of socio-demographic factors and approach towards environment on perceptions regarding environmental risk. The participants of the study are 682 high school students from seven geographical regions of Turkey. The data were collected through the Environmental Risk Perception scale, which were consisted four domains and NEP scale (NEP), which were used to determination students’ approach towards environment. Demographic data were analyzed through descriptive statistics in terms of percentage and frequency. Demographic data which are the independent variables were analyzed through MANOVA to identify whether or not they influence the participants’ risk perceptions. The demographic characteristics of the participants were obtained through a separate questionnaire. According to the results of the MANOVA test female students considered environmental risks significantly more important in all subscales in comparison to male students; and students from the Black Sea region had the highest average score in all subscales of the Environmental Risk Perception scale. Results of the study supported that the geographical region and gender were among the variables of risk perception. Differences between geographical regions should be investigated in terms of sustainable development. In addition, the arrangement of environmental education strategies in accordance with the environmental education needs of each geographical region may be useful for experts.
