Smart Grid – next-gen intelligent power grid – bidirectional flow of electricity and information – combined technology (comm and control) for reliability, security and efficiency Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) - consists of smart meters, communication network and MDMS provides timely information (energy consumption data and event logs) for detection of NTL The electrical losses (in generation, transmission and distribution of electricity) are classified into : TL (technical losses) - relatively easier to model, analyse and calculate NTL (non-technical losses) - more difficult to detect / measure accurately refers to illegal consumption of electricity such as electricity theft and other customer malfeasances Presented by Kee K.K.

Design and development of an innovative smart metering system with GUI-based NTL detection platform
Introduction • •
NTL may cause up to 40% of the revenue loss of utility companies worldwide Estimated worldwide revenue loss due to NTL : US$25 billion every year [10]. India with US$4.5 billion [3] US$6.0 billion for USA [4] In Malaysia, It was reported the NTL loss of RM150 to RM500 million between 2010 and 2011 in West Malaysia [5,6] whereas RM150 million loss for Sarawak in 2010 [7,8].

Design and development of an innovative smart metering system with GUI-based NTL detection platform
Motivation and Problem Statement •
The proposed detection mechanisms: Energy balance method [12] – use phase current readings (transformer feeder LV and connected loads) Physical detection sensors – use sensors (LDR, voltage / current sensing) – event logs for status of meter casing, supply cutoff Smart meters in AMI [11] – lot of unfiltered data – require trending and analysis for useful info AI (artificial intelligence) methods (fuzzy logic and SVM). [14,15,16] – use energy consumption data for classification and identification.

Design and development of an innovative smart metering system with GUI-based NTL detection platform
Motivation and Problem Statement •
The problematic issues: Those mechanisms are merely implemented separately with dissatisfaction outcomes due to inherent limitations and weaknesses. Lack of the validation of detection result for enhanced hit rate. Lack of user-friendly NTL detection platform to consolidate different detection techniques

NTL Detection Framework •
A 3-tier design of detection algorithm is proposed to combine three detection mechanisms to complement each other for the enhanced performance. 1. Comparison of phase current readings - To identify the “suspected” cluster / area from large pool of users – Tagged cluster
2. Applying AI-method of detection - To identify the “suspected” customers from tagged cluster Tagged customers
3. Correlation with the event logs - To verify and confirm “highly suspected” customers The list for enforcement team.

Conclusion • NTL remains as a problematic issue of the utility companies, which may cause the revenue loss up to 40%. • A novel design of smart metering system with user-friendly GUI-based detection platform for NTL is proposed 3-tier design of detection algorithm by integration of three different detection mechanisms into one operational platform. The triangulation technique is applied to facilitate the validation of detection result through cross verification from three convergence of measurement data for better validity. As a proof of concept, a prototype of working model is developed to demonstrate its functionalities Presented by Kee K.K.
