3. A NEW NOTE
The CD covers the first 58 exercises. From the very beginning, students can model tone production and technique by listening to a professional soloist on their specific instrument! The exercises are played twice – students can first play along with the professional player, and then play “solo” with the accompaniment track. These accompaniments (on real instruments, not synthesized) teach phrasing and dynamics, encouraging musicality from the very beginning, while students explore a wide variety of musical styles and cultures – classical, rock, jazz, country and world music! The CD can also be used as a CD-rom with a PC or Mac computer. See pages 4-7 for details on these exciting features.
ENHANCED STARTING SYSTEM Book 1 uses unmeasured Long Tones to establish good tone production from the very beginning, and uses Quarter Notes to teach pulse and rhythm. By exercise 14 your students will be playing well-known melodies and enjoying the excitement of playing in the band! The unique considerations of Horns and Oboes are difficult to address using a classroom band method, so we’ve created special pages for these instruments with their own optional starting systems. Along with the DVD, their books include two CDs to play along with the starting system that you choose!
• SmartMusic® software • Finale NotePad® software
OPTIMUM REINFORCED LEARNING
• Tempo Adjustment software (for play-along tracks)
DVD and Video! The DVD offers even more features for student learning. In addition to the tools on the CD, the DVD gives each student a start-up video to learn the basics for their instrument – just like a private lesson with a teacher! The DVD can also be used with a PC or Mac computer for additional features that do not appear on the CD:
See the sequence on the right to see this reinforced learning technique in action.
• All play-along tracks - for the entire book (with tempo adjustment software)
THEORY, HISTORY, CROSS-CURRICULUM AND CREATIVITY ... ALL IN THE STUDENT BOOKS!
• Additional, printable Duet and Trio Music (for any combination of instruments)
It’s all right in each student book, correlated with the music and concepts they are currently learning. This is by far the most efficient way to meet the National Standards, integrate other subjects into the music curriculum, and still teach the essentials of music performance.

New material is carefully paced, sequential and immediately reinforced. New notes are approached in the easiest ways, then gradually played within wider skips and different rhythms. Each new rhythm is introduced as a Rhythm Rap, then repeated on simple pitches, and finally placed in an appropriate melodic setting.

12 FULL BAND ARRANGEMENTS & A PLANNED CONCERT
..
Œ
Research shows that students are more likely to succeed (and stay in band) if they perform a concert for parents within the first 8 weeks. That’s why we’ve created an impressive early concert featuring 6 full band arrangements after they’ve learned just 7 notes! The concert is the first of the Performance Spotlight features, which include 12 full band arrangements and 2 solos with piano accompaniment.

Jacques Offenbach
Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg (1843–1907) wrote Peer Gynt Suite for a play by Henrik Ibsen in 1875, the year before the telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell. “Morning” is a melody from Peer Gynt Suite. Music used in plays, or in films and television, is called incidental music.

You can perform this solo with or without a piano accompanist. Play it for the band, the school or your family. It is part of Symphony No. 9 (“From The New World”) by Czech composer Antonin Dvorák (1841–1904). He wrote it while visiting America in 1894, and was inspired to include melodies from American folksongs and spirituals. This is the Largo (or “very slow tempo”) theme.

The first known printing of the lyrics and music to The Marines’ Hymn dates from August 1, 1918. An unknown author is believed to have taken the opening words of the song from the words on the Marine Corps flag,“From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli.” The music was taken from “Genevieve de Brabant,” by the operetta composer Jacques Offenbach.

I WALK THE ROAD AGAIN
Black American spirituals originated in the 1700’s. As one of the largest categories of true American folk music, these melodies were sung and passed on for generations without being written down. Black and white people worked together to publish the first spiritual collection in 1867, four years after The Emancipation Proclamation was signed into law.
