Xpansion I/O for your application and every application
The Perfect Fit
Simple Wiring
Protos X I/O is a perfect fit for most applications, particularly where you need distributed or compact I/O. Regardless of the size, budget or demand, this product can accommodate your needs and deliver every time.
With the push-in, spring clamp wiring system on the Protos X I/O terminals, installation has never been easier. There is never a concern for over tightening or under tightening. No screw heads to fiddle with or making sure you have a screwdriver that fits. Simply strip your wire and push it in to the terminal point.
At just 12mm thick, the super thin and attractive form factor allows you to manage the overall size and cost of your mechanical design. Now you can fit more I/O into a smaller footprint (linear DIN rail space), saving you money when sourcing enclosures for new applications or making it a more attractive fit for existing ones. When compared to more traditional Field I/O, Protos X I/O saves you roughly 70% more linear DINRail space! This practical product makes your everyday applications easier to accomplish and saves you time. The footprint allows you to install Protos X I/O on or near the equipment it is monitoring. This reduces field wiring and provides fast and reliable updates to your control system.
Power and Expansion
• 24VDC or 120-230 VAC power feed terminals let you switch voltage on the power bus • Bus Expansion End Terminals and Couplers let you expand the system easily
Note: Either the PX-901 End terminal or PX-902 Expansion End terminal are required on every system.
Monitor just a couple points or a couple hundred points The Protos X I/O offers a wide selection of I/O modules, also called terminals. With densities ranging from 2 points per I/O terminal up to 16 points per terminal, you have the ability to precisely configure your control system to the exact number of points you need, eliminating overpaying for unused I/O points. You designed your system for the number of points that you need, why pay for more?
Communicate with Modbus With both Serial Modbus RTU and Ethernet Modbus TCP bus couplers available, you have the freedom to connect to hundreds of control devices in our industry, including the most popular PLCs and SCADA/HMI packages. This flexibility allow each user to select the control platform that best fits the project and still save money by selecting a universal I/O product to complete the job.
The Signals you Need
• 2, 4, 8 and 16-point discrete I/O terminals available in a variety of signals including 24VDC, 120VAC & 240VAC • 2, 4 and 8-point analog terminals with signal ranges of 4-20mA, +/-10VDC, 0-5/0-10VDC • 2 and 4-channel temperature modules in both thermocouple (J and K types) and RTD (Pt100).

Unique Design Because of the interlocking design of the terminals, the data and power buses are carried from module to module and picked up only when needed! This unique design allows the system to easily switch the module’s required field power while continuing to keep the data bus intact. This design also makes it simple to provide a specific voltage to a series of modules, like an internal jumper, supplying power from module to module.
I/O Bus contacts
Note: PX-TCP2 (shown) is expanded via the second Ethernet port included on the bus coupler. The expansion terminals are not supported. The PX-TCP1 only has one Ethernet port and requires the PX-902/903 expansion terminals if you need to add more than a single group or for remote terminals.

The Xact I/O you need, where you need it Why Remote I/O?
I/O Where you Need it
With the infusion of lower-cost PC technology working its way into industrial controllers, PLCs and PLC-based PACs are becoming more and more powerful. Greater processing power and larger memory capacity in these controllers means that you can accomplish more with a single control system. However, the field wiring in these systems becomes increasingly expensive and difficult to manage. It’s not practical to think you can control an entire logistical distribution system out of a single control cabinet … You must network.
The unique slim design and low cost of the Protos X I/O makes it the most practical distributed I/O available today. The ultra slender form factor makes it easy to install on or near your machine or application components. This saves you time and money by eliminating excess field wiring and speeds up troubleshooting.
With distributed or remote I/O, you can localize a low-cost I/O solution on or near the equipment you’re controlling and monitoring, drastically reducing your field wiring. You can keep the hundreds of control signal wires on the machine and transfer all data back to the main control panel with an off-the-shelf Ethernet or serial cable.
This ultra-compact design makes it perfect for those applications where a typical PLC or I/O solution simply would not fit.
mFED-4
Universal Field I/O
The slim design also allows you to more precisely select the I/O count you need for your system. By building a system that contains the exact I/O count required and not a lot of extra, unused points, you’re only paying for what you need.

Bus Couplers PX-MOD For expansion beyond a 64-terminal assembly, a Bus Expansion End Terminal (PX-902) is used in place of a standard Bus End Terminal (PX-901). A Bus Expansion Coupler Terminal (PX-903) is used at each expansion assembly in place of a PX-MOD Bus Coupler. Up to 31 Expansion couplers can be used in a group of assemblies. Connection is made between the Expansion Coupler Terminals via standard RJ45 Ethernet patch cable.
System Considerations The PX-MOD performs as a Modbus RTU/ASCII slave in a Modbus network. Communication to the master is via a 9-pin D-sub RS-485 port. The maximum distance from the master to the PX-MOD is 4000 feet (1200 meters) using 24 AWG shielded, twisted pair. Termination resistors are required at the beginning and end of the network. It is highly recommended that a dedicated network be used for the Protos X system. The PX-MOD Bus Coupler supports up to 64 terminals per assembly, 255 with Bus Expansion Couplers. A minimal assembly consists of a PX-MOD Bus Coupler, I/O Terminals and a Bus End Terminal.
Bus Coupler PX-MOD
An I/O Bus, powered through the Bus Coupler, provides data communication across the terminal assembly via six contacts located on the side walls of the terminals. A Terminal Power Bus provides power for the I/O terminals via two power contacts. A power source of 24VAC or 24VDC must be connected to the Bus Coupler from an external supply.
I/O-Bus
It is important to stay within the following three specifications:. 1. Do not exceed the total number of 64 Terminals allowed per Assembly. 2. Do not exceed the total number of 512 Input Bytes and 512 Output Bytes. 3. Do not exceed the Coupler I/O Bus Power Budget of 1000mA as there is no internal current protection.

Bus Couplers PX-TCP1 System Considerations The PX-TCP1 performs as a Modbus TCP server in a Modbus network. Communication to the client is via an RJ45 Ethernet port. The maximum distance from the client to the PX-TCP1 is 330 feet (100 meters) using 24 AWG shielded, twisted pair Cat5e cable. It is highly recommended that a dedicated network be used for the Protos X system.
For expansion beyond a 64-terminal assembly, a Bus Expansion End Terminal (PX-902) is used in place of a standard Bus End Terminal (PX-901). A Bus Expansion Coupler Terminal (PX-903) is used at each expansion assembly in place of a PX-TCP1 Bus Coupler. Up to 31 Expansion couplers can be used in a group of assemblies. Connection is made between the Expansion Coupler Terminals via standard RJ45 Ethernet patch cable.
The PX-TCP1 Bus Coupler supports up to 64 terminals per assembly, 255 with Bus Expansion Couplers. A minimal assembly consists of a PX-TCP1 Bus Coupler, I/O Terminals and a Bus End Terminal.

An I/O Bus, powered through the Bus Coupler, provides data communication across the terminal assembly via six contacts located on the side walls of the terminals. A Terminal Power Bus provides power for the I/O terminals via three contacts; 24V, 0V and PE. A power source of 24VAC or 24VDC must be connected to the Bus Coupler from an external supply. The PE Bus is available for terminals that support PE connectivity.
Bus Coupler PX-TCP1
It is important to stay within the following three specifications:. 1. Do not exceed the total number of 64 Terminals allowed per Assembly. 2. Do not exceed the total number of 512 Input Bytes and 512 Output Bytes. 3. Do not exceed the Coupler I/O Bus Power Budget of 1000mA as there is no internal current protection.

Power Budget Planning Managing Power Resources When determining the types and quantity of terminals you will be using, it is important to remember there is a defined amount of I/O Bus Current supplied from the Bus Coupler. There are also defined limits for each external source. The chart on the next page indicates the power supplied and used by each Protos X component. The chart below shows an example of how to calculate the power used by your particular system. These charts should make it easy for you to determine if the devices you have chosen will operate within the power budget of your system configuration. If the I/O terminals you have chosen exceed the maximum power available from the Bus Coupler, you may be able to resolve the problem by using expansion terminals.
Power Budget Example The example on the right shows how to calculate the power budget for a typical Protos X system. This example is constructed using a PX-MOD Bus Coupler and six I/O Terminals. It is recommended you construct a similar table for your system. Follow the steps below to determine your power budget. 1. Using a chart similar to this one, fill in columns 1 and 2.
A
Column 2
Column 3

B CURRENT SUPPLIED PX-MOD
Bus Coupler
1000mA
C CURRENT REQUIRED PX-144 PX-172-1 PX-322-1 PX-312 PX-244-1 PX-412
2. U sing the tables on the next page enter the current supplied and current used by each device (column 3). 3. Add together the current used by the system (row C) for column 3 and put the total in the row labeled “Maximum Current Required” (row D).
Column 1
4pt. DC Discrete Input 2pt. AC Discrete Input 2ch. RTD Input 2ch. DC Analog Input 4pt. DC Discrete Output 2ch. DC Analog Output
5mA 3mA 60mA 65mA 9mA 75mA
D Maximum Current Required
217mA
Remaining Current Available
783mA
E
4. Subtract the calculated “Maximum Current Required” (row D), from the “Current Supplied” and place the difference in the row labeled “Remaining Current Available” (row E). 5. If “Maximum Current Required” is greater than “Current Supplied” in column 3, the power budget will be exceeded. It will be unsafe to use this configuration, and you will need to restructure your I/O configuration.

These tables show the amount of power supplied by each of the Bus Couplers and the amount of power consumed by each I/O device. The Power Consumed chart lists how much power is drawn from the I/O Bus, Terminal Power Bus (externally supplied) and from the Load (when using output terminals). Use this information when calculating the power budget for your system.

System Installation and Removal Bus Coupler and Bus Terminal Installation Bus Coupler Installation:
2
1. Attach a Bus Coupler by snapping it onto 35mm DIN rail and securing it into position using the DIN rail locking wheel (where applicable) located on the left side of the coupler.
Insert unit using tongue and groove ntil molded guide and press gently until it becomes firmly seated on DIN rail. ra ail. Where applicable, rotate Locking Wheel to lock Bus Coupler
Bus Terminal Installation: 2. To add a bus terminal, insert unit onto right side of Bus Coupler using the tongue and groove at the top and bottom of the unit, pressing gently until it snaps onto the DIN rail.
1
A proper connection cannot be made by sliding the units together on the DIN rail. When correctly installed, no significant gap can be seen between the attached units. Bus connection is made through the six slide contacts located on the upper right side of the units. Add up to 64 bus terminals per Bus Coupler, including a bus end terminal.

Use Terminator I/O with DeviceNetTM or PROFIBUSTM and save a ton of money. Terminator I/O offers a DeviceNet slave network interface module (T1K-DEVNETS) that can connect to any DeviceNet master controller, even Allen-Bradley© PLCs! The PROFIBUS interface module (T1H-PBC) does the same for Siemens or GE PLCs. This means you can substitute any DeviceNet or PROFIBUS slave I/O station with Terminator I/O, but won’t have to change any other hardware or network cabling in your system.
We know that many of the industries you serve will specify another PLC as the master controller on DeviceNet or PROFIBUS, but may not demand a certain manufacturer’s I/O. This is where AutomationDirect and Terminator I/O can help you save money and win the bidding war on these projects. Check out the sample systems below to see how AutomationDirect can “show you the money”.

Just a few applications where Terminator I/O fits PLC systems Terminator I/O, with its variety of DC and AC discrete, analog, analogcombination and specialty modules, fills the need for distributed I/O in any size PLC system. An Ethernet Remote Master (H2-ERM100 and H4-ERM100) from a DL205 or DL405 series PLC, paired with an Ethernet Base Controller (T1H-EBC100) at remote I/O locations can supply you with up to a maximum of sixteen Terminator I/O nodes per Ethernet Remote Master channel. With hot-swappable modules and each node capable of handling hundreds of I/O points, Terminator I/O increases the capability of the PLC system you’re already using, at a price that won’t push the budget of your project.
Use the E-SW050U Ethernet Switch for deterministic Ethernet control for your application.
PLC systems
SCADA systems Terminator I/O can provide great low-cost I/O for your SCADA (Statistical Control and Data Acquisition) system. For example, a PC running KEPDirect Ethernet I/O OPC Server can monitor and control your distributed I/O via an Ethernet Base Controller (T1H-EBC100). Terminator I/O is also offered with DeviceNet, Modbus and Profibus interfaces. Terminator I/O’s convenient, modular terminal bases are perfect for your remote I/O locations. Terminator I/O’s slim profile and optional panel or DIN-rail mounting make it easy to install and wire the perfect combination of I/O in small junction boxes or other tight spaces close to your field devices.
SCADA Systems
PC-based control systems Terminator I/O is the clear choice for PC-based control I/O systems. Choose a network interface module and the I/O modules to meet your application’s needs. Terminator I/O is compatible with several PC-based control packages, including Think & Do Studio and Think & Do Live! flowchart-based control software. Choose Think & Do Live!, add one of our industrial monitors to your PC, and you have a PC control system that is Ethernet-ready to connect to Terminator I/O.

Terminator I/O How it works: Terminator I/O combines all the features of terminal blocks and I/O modules into one convenient package.
One of the best features of Terminator I/O is its connectivity. We offer a choice of five plug-compatible network interface modules to connect you to your choice of network.
Achieve maximum system flexibility with our DIN rail mountable Terminator I/O system. Shorten wiring runs by locating I/O near field devices. Add modules in the future without buying new bases.
Each system needs at least one AC or DC power supply, but you can add more power if you need it. And, we offer a wide variety of discrete and analog I/O modules.
Our removable I/O modules connect internally to three-tier spring clamps or screw-type terminal blocks.
Building a system from Terminator I/O components With Terminator I/O, you mount just the I/O modules you need to your DIN rail (or you can panel-mount them). You are not limited by a fixed base size. And you can choose any compatible PC, PLC or other fieldbus network master.
You’ll save the cost of separate terminal blocks (and save the labor required to wire from traditional PLC I/O to separate terminal blocks). Maybe you need fused outputs? We offer those, too!

Local expansion Terminator I/O systems can contain up to 16 modules per node. Each node can be divided into two rows of local expansion (1 network interface base + 2 expansion bases) to accommodate flexible panel space requirements in remote junction boxes. Terminator I/O can be mounted either horizontally or vertically.
www.automationdirect.com/fieldIO
Terminator I/O module addressing will be different depending on which network interface protocol is used. For example, DeviceNet™ and PROFIBUS™ support “word” data types for mapping analog modules. For Koyo remote I/O, only discrete (“X” inputs, “Y” outputs) data types are supported, and mapping analog modules is accomplished in blocks of 32 I/O points per channel. Each of the following I/O module specification pages includes an entry for number of I/O points (bits) per module.

Dimensions and Installation It is important to understand the installation requirements for your Terminator I/O system. This will ensure that the Terminator I/O products work within their environmental and electrical limits.
See the Enclosures section for an enclosure that may be suitable for your application
Plan for safety This catalog should never be used as a replacement for the technical data sheet that comes with the products or the T1K-INST-M Installation and I/O Manual (available online at www.automationdirect.com.) The technical data sheet contains information that must be followed. The system installation should comply with all appropriate electrical codes and standards.
Unit dimensions and mounting orientation Use the following diagrams to make sure the Terminator I/O system can be installed in your application. Terminator I/O units should be mounted horizontally. To ensure proper airflow for cooling purposes, units should not be mounted upside-down. It is important to check the Terminator I/O dimensions against the conditions required for your application. For example, it is recommended to leave 2” depth for ease of access and cable clearance. However, your distance may be greater or less. Also, check the installation guidelines for the recommended cabinet clearances.

Some of the examples below show the T1K-05CBL-RR expansion cable. This cable is no longer available. Refer to the examples if you already have these cables. If you are purchasing new cables, we recommend the T1K-10CBL(-1) cables.
The T1K-05CBL-RR connects the right side of an I/O base to the right side of the next I/O base. A maximum Cable length = 0.5m of one T1K-05CBL-RR cable can be Cable length = 1.0m used per expansion system. Note: When this cable is used, the expansion I/O assignments are from right to left (reversed). *Note: The (-1) versions of the expansion cables pass 24 VDC through on an isolated wire. (All cables pass the 5 VDC base power.) Any local expansion DC input module configured for “internal power” (current sourcing) must either have a power supply preceding it on the same base or, have a (-1) version cable pass 24 VDC from a power supply on the preceeding base.
Using two T1K-10CBL expansion cables In the system below, power supplies can be used anywhere.
Using T1K-10CBL expansion cable and T1K-05CBL-RR expansion cable Power supplies can be used anywhere in the first two bases, but not in the last expansion base.

Field device wiring options Power your DC input devices from the integrated 24 VDC power supply bus. T1K-08ND3 and T1K-16ND3 DC input modules include jumpers for selecting the internal 24 VDC power supply available for 2- and 3-wire field devices. Clearly labeled triple stack terminals make it easy to wire 2- and 3-wire devices ensuring clean wiring with only one wire per termination.
2 and 3-wire DC input devices using bussed 24 VDC power
External user supplied 24 VDC power, or auxiliary 24 VDC terminals from T1K-01AC, can be easily applied directly to one end of the terminal rows and jumpered across each base in the system. This is a convenient solution for powering analog I/O and discrete DC output devices whose modules do not have direct access to the internal bussed 24 VDC. If current consumption increases, simply add additional T1K-01AC power supplies into the system.
Use externally supplied 24 VDC power or 24 VDC auxiliary power from T1K-01AC
Do not jumper modules together to create a 24 VDC bus when using the “hot swap” feature. See Note below.
Hot-swap feature The hot-swap feature allows Terminator I/O modules to be replaced while system power is on. Be careful not to touch the terminals with your hands or other conductive material to avoid the risk of personal injury or equipment damage. Always remove power if it is equally convenient to do so.
tFED-59
Universal Field I/O
Note: Before hot-swapping analog or DC output modules in a Terminator I/O system, make sure that each of the analog and DC output module’s 24 VDC and 0 VDC base terminals are wired directly to the external power supply individually. If the external 24 VDC and 0 VDC is jumpered from base to base in a daisy chain
fashion, and an analog or DC output module is removed from its base, the risk of disconnecting the external 24 VDC and 0 VDC to the subsequent I/O modules exists.

Modbus RTU Slave T1K-MODBUS $184.00
Asynchronous communications In most applications, the Modbus master polls the slaves individually (T1K-MODBUS) to read/write each slave’s I/O. The communication between the Modbus master and slave will often be asynchronous to the master CPU scan. For this reason, applications should be limited to those that do not require the I/O points to update every master CPU scan.
OR
Any PLC or PC MODBUS RTU master
The Terminator I/O Modbus network interface module allows you to connect I/O as a slave station on a Modbus RTU network. The T1K-MODBUS can communicate with any Modbus RTU network master using high-level Modbus commands.
T1K-MODBUS slaves
DirectLOGIC Modbus communications Some of our DirectLOGIC PLCs can be used as Modbus masters, directly through a communication port on the CPU. (Consult the PLC section of this catalog for more information.)
Network configuration options You can configure a simple point-to-point network or create a multidrop network using the RS-232, RS-422/485 HD-15 Modbus port. The T1K-MODBUS has two rotary switches that can be set to designate the module’s slave address. Set the rotary switches to give each slave a unique address in a range from 1-F7 hex (1-247 decimal). The T1K-MODBUS also has an auxiliary RJ12 RS-232 serial port that can be used to configure the Modbus port with the T1K-MODBUS Setup Tool.

NOTES: 1: Shields should be grounded at the signal source. 2: More than one external power supply can be used, provided all the power supply commons are connected. 3: A Series 217, 0.032 A fast-acting fuse is recommended for 4-20 mA current loops. 4: If the power supply common of an external power supply is not connected to the 0V terminal on the module, then the output of the external transmitter must be isolated. To avoid “ground loop” errors, recommended 4-20 mA transmitter types are: - For 2 or 3 wire connections: Isolation between the input supply signal and the power supply. - For 4 wire connections: Isolation between the input supply signal, the power supply and the 4-20 mA output.
