1. DISTRICT PROFILE: 1.1
Geography
District Ghazipur is situated to the east of Varanasi commissionary between 15°19' and 25°95' northern latitudes. It lies between 83°04'E and 83°58'E longitudes at attitude of 225 feet above see level. Its length from east to west and north to south is 90 kms and 64 kms. Respectively. The river Ganga and Karmanasha separate it from state Bihar. It is bounded by Ballia district and Bihar state in east, by Jaunpur, Varanasi and Azamgarh in west, by Mau and Ballia in north and by Chandauli in south. The boundaries are generally conventional though at places they are marked by natural feature. The total geographic area of this district is 3384 Sq. km. Ghazipur is embellished with picturesque geographical environs. This place is a part of mid gangetic plain. Total area is approx. 3,33,209 hectare in which 2,52,824 hectare is for agricultural purpose. Approx 38% of is cattlefield. This district does not contain any forest area.

Administrative Units
Ghazipur was constituted a separate district in 1818. Originally the district was very big, including not only modern Balia but also Narwan of Varanasi, Chausa of Buxar (Bihar) and pargana of Sagari, Ghosi, Mau and Muhammdabad in district Azamgarh. The District has five subdivisions viz. Sadar, Saidpur, Zamania, Muhammdabad and Jakhania each also forming a tehsil of same name and Tehsil Saidpur constitutes the western subdivision of the district. Tehsil and Subdivision Ghazipur constitute the central part, tehsil Muhammdabad forms the northeastern subdivision and extends eastward from the border of Ghazipur to boundary of Balia. Tehsil Zamania forms the southwestern subdivision, The Jahkhnia subdivision; newly constructed tehsil lies in northwestern part of district and 16 blocks. Ghazipur district consist of 193 Nyay Panchayats and 1046 Gram Sabhas. There are Total 2583 inhabited villages and 781 uninhabited villages in district. In Urban sector there are 3 Nagar Paika Parishads (Ghazipur, Muhammdabad, Zamania) and 5 Town Areas (Saidpur, Jangipur, Dildarnagar, Sadat and Bahadurganj). There are total 23 Police Stations in District Ghazipur. Tehsil Ghazipur consist of 3 Police stations, Saidpur 4, Jakhania 3, Zamania 2 and Muhammdabad 5, in urban areas there are 7 Police Stations. There are total 210 Govt. Offices served by 14638 officials. Total 6811 Teachers in 1830 primary schools, 2755 Teachers in 396 Junior High Schools, 2795 Teachers in higher secondary and 332 Teachers in degree colleges are giving their contributions in the districts. There are 55 Class 1 and 391 Class 2 officers working in the district.

General Law & Order
The district Ghazipur is perhaps a peaceful district in Uttar Pradesh with no records of any major breakdown of Law & Order. The District Magistrate is responsible for maintaining Law & Order in the district and is assisted by those delegated by him in this regard and by the Superintendent of Police and his office and other satellite offices.
