Thanks! Dr. Brandon Park | March 26, 2017 The tool behind your teeth, the tongue, can influence your world for good or for bad. It can bring life, or it can bring death. Proverbs 18:21, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.” We need to be made aware of the incredible power that is behind our words. In Hosea 4:6, Scripture tell us: “My people perish for lack of knowledge.” Words definitely do have either a positive or a negative effect on us and those around us. This is why one of the most difficult things we face on a daily basis is trying to control our mouth. Words are _________________ of power. Every word we speak has positive or negative power, creative or destructive power.

1. Words are like _________; when you speak something out, you give _______ to what you are saying.

Matthew 18:18-19, "Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven." Jesus is teaching us here—as he does throughout his ministry—that our life experience will express according to our faith. We "bind on earth" when we decide what we believe about this life experience, and that belief will become our full experience. If we believe in a dangerous world, we will experience a dangerous world. If we believe in an enemy trying to do us harm, that will be our experience. EXAMPLE: David and Goliath. When David faced Goliath, it looked impossible. All the odds were against him. Yet David looked Goliath in the eyes and said, “You come against me with a sword and a shield. But I come against you in the name of the Lord God of Israel. This day, I will defeat you and feed your head to the birds of the air!” (1 Samuel 17:45). Notice he was prophesying victory. He may have felt fear, but he spoke faith. The first place we lose the battle is in our own ______________. If you think it’s permanent, then it’s permanent. If you think you’ve reached your limits, you have. The moment when you accept it as the norm is when it will take root and become a reality. The Scripture says, “We will eat the fruit of our words.” That means we will get exactly what we’ve been saying. Proverbs 6:2 says, “You have been trapped by the words of your lips—ensnared by the words of your mouth.” Our words can trap us. They can get us into situations we never should have gotten into. NEUROLOGICAL EFFECTS OF WORDS ON THE HUMAN BRAIN: When you listen to a person speak, your brain begins to sync with their brain. You begin to exhibit the same brain wave patterns. As they communicate an idea, that idea is first found in the speaker’s brain. One single idea is composed of a few million brain neurons that are all linked together and is arranged in a very specific pattern. As that idea is being communicated through words, it is literally being recreated and restructured inside the brain of the person hearing it. All of this takes place just from listening to words. Not only do our words affect other people, but they also affect us. When you speak, your words not only impact the ears and brains of those that are listening, but once it comes out in your voice, those words also go back into your own ears and reinforce whatever that thought was. Whatever you say about yourself (or others) – when you give voice to it – those neural pathways become stronger, and it takes root more deeply inside your brain.

2. Send your words out in the ________________ you want your life to go.

Your life will move in the direction of your words. EXAMPLE: In Numbers 13, Moses sent 12 men in to spy out the Promised Land. After 40 days, 10 of them came back and said that they were incapable of taking the land due to the people who occupied

it. The negative report from the 10 spies spread like wildfire throughout the rest of the camp. (A negative report always spreads faster than a positive report.) The people of Israel were so distressed by the negative report that they complained against Moses and Aaron, “Why did you even bring us out here? We’re going to die in the wilderness. Our children, our wives, they’re going to be taken as plunder.” God answered back something very powerful and very sobering. He said in Numbers 14, “I will do for you exactly what you have said. You said you’re going to die in the wilderness, so you will die in the wilderness.” God is saying the same thing to us. Your life will move in the direction of your words.

3. With our tongue, we can __________ our life or we can __________ our life.

Matthew 12:36-27 says, “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Many people don’t realize they’re cursing their future with their words. Sometimes the enemy doesn’t have to defeat us; we _____________ ourselves. Pay attention to what you’re saying. Are you blessing your life? Or are you cursing it? Never say negative things about ______________. Most of us would never go up to another person, at least to their face, and criticize them, yet we have no problem criticizing ourselves. In Joel 3:10, Scripture says, “Let the weak say, ‘I am strong.’” In other words, if we are feeling weak, then we need to say exactly the opposite of how we feel. Don’t talk about the way you _______. Talk about the way you __________ to be. Romans 4:17 says that God “calls the things that are not as though they were.” Don’t talk about the way you are, talk about the way you want to be. Don’t use your words to describe the situation. Use your words to change the situation.

4. Don’t give a ____________ to toxic, negative thoughts.

Proverbs 6:2 states, “We are snared by the words of our mouth.” Snared means “to be trapped.” Your words can trap you. You’re not snared by what you think. Negative thoughts come to us all. But when you speak them out loud, you give them life. That’s when they become a reality. One of the hardest things that any one of us will ever have to do is to have a problem and not say something ________________. Words have power in the spirit realm. Jesus said, “My words are spirit and they are life” (John 6:63). Your words are the one thing that operates both in the physical realm AND in the spirit realm. Words spoken become “doorways” for the enemy to come in through. REMEMBER THIS: Anything that you are willing to ____________, you will never _____________. 2 Corinthians 10:5, "We take captive every thought and we make it obedient to Christ." When you have a rebellious thought, you should capture it, shut it up, and teach it to obey Christ. Three Biblical examples of not giving voice to negative thoughts: • __________________ - God said, “Jeremiah, say not that you are too young.” • __________________ - Because he doubted, he had to remain silent and was unable to speak until the baby was born. • __________________ and the battle of ________________ - They were not permitted to speak while they marched around the city for six days.

5. Don’t ___________ on the problem; start _______________ God’s promise.

God’s Word is meant to flow into you and then out of you. Putting God’s Word in your mouth and ears may be the most effective way of placing it within your heart. (Read Joshua 1:8.) There’s something about speaking the Word of God that grows our faith! Romans 10:17 says, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.” • What negative thoughts are dominating your thinking? _____________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ • What spiritual truth will demolish your strongholds?_______________________________ __________________________________________________________________________ EX: Worried all the time? “Because of Christ, I’m not anxious about anything. I cast my cares on God because He cares for me. I have the peace of God dwelling in my heart and ruling my mind.” EX: Don’t know God’s will? “My life belongs to God. Daily I seek Him and daily He directs my steps. I know His voice and He leads me to His perfect will.”
