Introduction. Physical exercise is a subset of physical activity that is planned and structured to improve or maintain physical fitness that includes cardio-respiratory fitness, muscle strength, body composition and flexibility. In normal condition, body composition is held by energy balance that is influenced by diet and energy expenditure; therefore weight loss is achieved through a negative energy balance obtainable by caloric restriction, increased caloric expenditure or by diet plus exercise. The aim of this study was to assess the body composition in active and sedentary young people. Materials and Methods. Practice experience, type of exercise, physical exercise weekly amount and frequency have been investigated by questionnaire. The participants: 136 men (mean age 21±2.5) and 80 women (mean age 21±2.9) are splitted in active and sedentary people. Three months of consecutive exercise were necessary to be classified active people. Body composition was assessed by height, weight, BMI, waist circumference (WC), waist/hip and electric bio impedance (BIA). Anthropometric procedures were in accordance with Lohman et al. guidelines (1988). Instead Kyle et al. guidelines were followed for performing BIA in standardized conditions (2004).
