The Coupler
February 2013
FROMTHE DEAN Dear DCAGO friends and colleagues: On Presidents’ Day – Monday, 18 February – the DC Chapter will sponsor an exciting, day-‐long organ crawl in historic Center City Philadelphia. The trip will include: − transportation to and from Philadelphia via luxury coach; − lunch-‐on-‐your-‐own at the legendary Reading Terminal Market, which offers a vast array of culinary options at many price points; − a noontime recital at the former John Wanamaker Department Store, home of the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ (VI/462), the largest fully operational pipe organ in the world; − a private tour of the Wanamaker Organ, including the famed String Division, housed in the largest organ chamber in the world; − a visit to St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, known for its unique style of Anglo-‐Catholic worship, and home to two organs: a 1914 Austin (IV/51) and the recently installed 1933 Whitelegg-‐era Möller (II/15), which serves as the organ for St. John’s Chapel and an antiphonal organ for the main instrument; and − a visit to historic St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Locust Street, home of a 1937 Aeolian-‐Skinner (IV/162) which incorporates earlier pipework by Austin/Carleton Michell, the Wanamaker Shop, and recent additions by Cornell Zimmer. The complete schedule is: 7:45 a.m. Departure from Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church, Bethesda 10:30 a.m. Arrival in Center City Philadelphia 10:45 a.m. Lunch-‐on-‐your-‐own at the Reading Terminal Market 12 noon Organ recital at the former John Wanamaker Store 12:45 p.m. Private tour of the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ 2:30 p.m. Visit to St. Clement’s Episcopal Church 4:00 p.m. Visit to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church 5:30 p.m. Departure for Washington, DC 8:00 p.m. Arrival at Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church, Bethesda The total cost of the trip (not including lunch) is $45 – less than one would pay to drive to/from Philadelphia given the cost of gas and tolls. The clergy and staff of Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church, Bethesda, have graciously consented to our use of their parking lot on 18 February. Non-‐members are welcome! To reserve a space, please send a check in the amount of $45 to DCAGO Treasurer/Registrar Arthur Roach: Arthur Roach 1749B South Hayes Street Arlington, VA 22202-‐2797 Since the organ crawl is just a few weeks away, we ask that you also contact DCAGO Sub Dean Russell Weismann to express your interest in the trip:
[email protected] or 202.422.3387. We hope you will join us for this day of fellowship and fun with friends and colleagues! Best wishes, Tom Smith, Dean PS: The new DCAGO website is nearing completion! I thank you for your continued patience as we work to improve the chapter’s communications efforts.
