17th Annual Southern Author Series Join us next month for fascinating talks by fabulous local authors! Don’t miss this much-anticipated annual Timrod event. Talks by the authors take place in Bethany Methodist Church’s Spell Chapel (handicap-accessible) at 3:00 on each date, followed by refreshments, conversation, and book-signings in the Timrod. On Sunday, February 9 we welcome Virginia Christian Beach, author of Rice and Ducks – The Surprising Convergence that Saved the Carolina Lowcountry. Ms. Beach’s presentation of this landmark book on the history of the South Carolina rice lands will enlighten and entertain us all. She will be joined by Coy Johnston, whose untiring dedication through the years was a major component of the ACE Basin conservation effort. Virginia Beach is a graduate of the University of Virginia and a former Peace Corps volunteer, and writes for numerous local and regional publications on the subjects of conservation and natural history. She is the author of Medway, a history of a South Carolina plantation. Ms. Beach has served on the staffs of The Nature Conservancy, the Lowcountry Open Land Trust and the S.C. Sea Grant Consortium. Rose Moore Tomlin, author of the novel Duel of the Heart, will join us the following Sunday, February 16. Ms. Tomlin’s book delves into the life of Theodosia Burr Alston, daughter of political figure Aaron Burr and married to planter and South Carolina governor Joseph Alston. Ms. Tomlin’s historically accurate novel examines Theodosia’s roles of political wife and plantation mistress, and reveals the culture of the era and Theodosia’s own inner turmoil. Rose Tomlin’s essays have appeared in the Dallas Morning News-Herald, the Wilmington Star, the Charleston Post & Courier and many northeastern newspapers in the Gannett Chain. Her published work includes Two Seasons, Poetry by a Mother and Daughter. She lives in Charleston with her husband. Series subscriptions to the Southern Author Series, $50 per couple, may be purchased at the Timrod or by calling 871-4600.

Emma Says……………… The book Confessions: The Private School Murders by James Patterson was actually better than I had expected. It was multiple mysteries inside one mystery, and I say that for a “murder” mystery, it was mild. This book will (surprisingly) make you cry, but will also keep you on the edge of your seat. This book is very well written and it makes sure that you will not want to put it down. There are twists and turns. Trust me you do not want to read it at night. In some parts it will make your stomach churn. I give this book s for the storyline. (Check out 8th-grader Emma Loveland’s “Emma Says” corner in the children’s section of the Timrod for her latest book reviews. If you have a book you would like Emma to read and review, please send the Title and Author to: [email protected].)
