After losing my father, Hank Thompson, to lung cancer in 2008, I wanted to do something to fight this insidious disease. I looked for walks to join, races to run or ribbons to wear, but there were none. So, I launched the Hank Thompson Trek & Treat, which is the first fundraising and awareness event for lung cancer in Tennessee. In just three years, we have raised over $100,000 to fund lung cancer research right here at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and Vanderbilt University. The 4th Annual Hank Thompson Trek & Treat will take place on Saturday, October 27th at Hank Thompson Plaza at the Streets of Indian Lake in Hendersonville, Tennessee. This prominent location will play host to a 10K, (NEW THIS YEAR), 5K, a 1 Mile Fun Run and the popular Goblin Gallop, a 100-yard dash for the younger children. The races are followed by a Halloween Family Festival and a Balloon Release, which is a moving tribute to those who have been affected by cancer. The Trek & Treat offers fun activities for the whole family, while promoting lung cancer awareness and raising desperately needed research funds. Lung cancer takes more lives than breast, prostate, liver, kidney and melanoma cancers combined; yet it receives less funding than any of those. Since 1971, the five-year survival rate of only 15% has not changed because so little money is available for lung cancer research. Through a partnership with Uniting Against Lung Cancer, our proceeds directly fund lung cancer research. Since 2010, our funds have remained in Middle Tennessee by funding research grants awarded to Vanderbilt University. Our audience continues to grow each year & we anticipate that growth to continue, especially with the addition of new events, such as the 10K. We anticipate that the growth will continue and we would like to feature your business as one of our sponsors. By reducing most or all of our expenses, sponsorships enable us to fund more research grants. Together we can make progress toward defeating this devastating disease. Can we count on your support in 2012? Learn more about the benefits of sponsorship on the following pages. About Hank Thompson October 1, 2011

R.J. “Hank” Thompson was a respected politician and community advocate known for his vision and leadership. A political force in Sumner County for three decades, he served as County Executive (2002-2008), Mayor of Hendersonville, (1990-2000) and County Commissioner (1981-1990). Using his leadership skills and vision, he made many positive changes for Hendersonville and Sumner County. Whether it was building bridges, expanding highways, creating greenways, or building new sports fields, Hank always represented Sumner County with honor and determination. Hank shared his passion for youth and children by serving as a board member for Children Are People, Inc., the Jason Foundation, and Youth Inc. He also belonged to numerous organizations, including the Homeland Security Regional Executive Board, Regional Transit Authority Board, TN Municipal League Board, TN Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations, Founding Chairman of the Sumner County E 911 Committee, and the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Prior to his career in politics, Hank worked as an electrical engineer and manager for TVA for 28 years. Hank graduated from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He was also a 1st Lieutenant in the Tennessee National Guard. Hank was a proud graduate of Isaac Litton High School. Known by his trademark bald-head and unique hats, Hank had many hobbies and interests. He loved to cheer on the Tennessee Vols, ride his jet ski, travel, watch movies, study American history and spend time with his family. Most importantly, Hank was a Christian and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Nancy, for 45 years. He was an amazing father to Nick, Lance, and Amanda and father-in-law to Teena and Jon. He cherished being a grandfather to Addison, Lacey, Chase and Cody. In April 2007, Hank was diagnosed with Stage IV non-small cell lung cancer after suffering with a cough for over a year. He then endured numerous chemotherapy treatments and suffered severe side effects, including the loss of his voice. Due to limited lung cancer research, his treatment options were limited. In spite of his valiant efforts, Hank lost his battle against lung cancer on July 6, 2008 at the age of 69. Hank left behind a legacy of honor and determination. His family and friends continue to honor his life by fighting back against lung cancer with passion and determination.

October 1, 2011 The mission of Uniting Against Lung Cancer is to fight lung cancer by funding innovative research and increasing awareness of the disease. In only eight years of funding, Uniting and its partners have awarded over $8.3 million dollars in direct research grants to individual researchers at top cancer centers and raised awareness of lung cancer across the United States.

Founded in 2001, Uniting is one of the largest sources of private funding for lung cancer research in North America. Uniting is recognized as the source of “venture capital” for lung cancer research. Uniting is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that others can join to fight lung cancer. Dozens of families, foundations, and organizations partner with Uniting by using its established lung cancer research grant program to fund the best new lung cancer research projects. By working with Uniting, these groups put their money to work on lung cancer research, instead of the administrative costs of running their own non-profit organization. For more information about Uniting, visit www.unitingagainstlungcancer.org
