Hopkinton Center for the Arts Classes & Workshops Winter Session 2013-2014 Welcome to Winter 2013-2014 at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts! Thank you for considering classes and workshops at the HCA! Below you’ll find class and workshop listings and descriptions by grade/age category, in addition to details regarding meeting times/locations, fees, and instructors. All classrooms listed are at the HCA Farmhouse (98 Hayden Rowe Street, Hopkinton), unless otherwise noted. Classes for Grades Pre-K – K > Register Here < Brush of Art Mondays, December 2 – February 3 10:00 to 11:00 am Instructor: Robin Batchelder Location: Art Room Fee: $120 This survey class introduces students to various forms of art media and application techniques, including clay sculpting, drawing, painting, and mixed media! This class meets 8 times; no class on December 23 & 30 and January 20.

Musical Theater Little Ones Tuesdays, December 3 – February 4 10:00 to 11:00 am Instructor: Tina Grady Location: Gallery 3 Fee: $120 Your little ones will play acting/imagination games and learn fun musical theater songs while creating their own musical theater piece for the last day of class. This class teaches performance as well as character and team building skills. This class meets 8 times; no class December 24 & 31.

Classes for Grades 1 – 3 > Register Here < Acting UP Tuesdays, December 3 – February 4 4:00 to 5:00 pm Instructor: Alex Wersted Location: Gallery 3 Fee: $120 This introductory course to acting will use acting exercises and improvisation games to help students learn about creating a character, being comfortable on stage, auditioning, and more! This survey of art class allows students to explore the visual arts in one sitting! Students will complete projects using various media, including clay sculpting, painting, drawing, cartooning and mixed media! This class meets 8 times; no class December 24 & 31. Group Voice Mondays, December 2 – February 3 4:00 to 5:00 pm Instructor: Mark DiCampo Location: Studio 2 Fee: $120 This voice class covers breathing techniques, vocal exercises and music fundamentals to encourage students to confidently sing with a healthy, free voice! Students will use fun, age appropriate songs in their learning journey. This class meets 8 times; no class December 23 & 30 & January 20.

Classes for Grades 4 – 8 > Register Here < Advanced Acting Mondays, December 2 – February 10 5:00 to 6:30 pm Instructor: Alex Wersted Location: Gallery 3 Fee: $180 Working with a hands-on curriculum, students will gain the skills necessary to feel comfortable at their next audition and shine in their next production. Using techniques from the Stanislavski acting method, students will grow as actors both vocally and physically. From improvisational exercises to scene studies of contemporary and classical works, this class will allow students to explore as they develop characters and gain the confidence to grace the stage with a strong presence in every production they take on. Students will have the opportunity to work individually to tackle monologues, and work with partners in short scenes 10-minute plays. This class meets 8 times; no class on December 24 & 31. Cartooning & Comics Thursdays, December 5 – February 6 6:30 to 7:30 pm Instructor: Chris Watkins Location: Art Room Fee: $120 Come learn how to put the exciting ideas in your head on paper. We’ll start with how to draw fun cartoon

characters and the worlds they live in using techniques like building figures up out of basic shapes, and making drawings that look 3D with foreshortening and simple perspective tricks. We’ll explore what makes a great character design by looking at how our favorite characters are made, and we’ll learn how to create mood and emotion with facial expressions and body language. At the close of the class, we’ll dip into telling stories with pictures by making comic strips and a mini-comic book. This class meets 8 times; no class on December 26 and January 2. Let the Camera Roll Saturdays, December 7 – February 8 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Instructor: Dan Cote Location: Hopkinton High School Auditorium Fee: $240 Get behind and in front of the cameras as you create movie shorts working as a team by conceptualizing, shooting and then critiquing your work until you have movie shorts for a screening for friends and family. This class meets 8 times; no class December 28 & January 4.

M usical Theater Scenes Mondays, December 2 – February 10 5:00 to 6:00 pm Instructor: Mark DiCampo Location: Studio 2 Fee: $120 Singers will work in an ensemble setting to develop musicianship through ear training, sight-reading and becoming familiar with musical terms and styles through applied singing in a multi-voiced group. A final showcase of musical theatre scenes will happen on that last class date! This class meets 8 times; no class on December 23 & 30 and January 2.

Classes for Grades 9 – 12 > Register Here < Advanced Acting Mondays, December 2 – February 10 7:00 to 8:30 pm Instructor: Alex Wersted Location: Gallery 3 Fee: $180 Working with Using the Stanislavski acting style as a point of reference, students will participate in hands on exercises, scene studies, improvisational activities and character explorations in order to discover and groom their acting abilities. Students will focus on vocal, physical, and observational techniques as they explore what it means to be an actor on the big stage and in front of the camera. Instead of being told what to do, students will constantly explore and observe how their bodies move, how their voices sound, and how their presence is translated from the stage to the audience. By working on monologues and multiple person scenes from contemporary and classical works, students will gain the experience needed to feel comfortable at any audition. This class meets 8 times; no class December 24 & 31. Digital Camera Demystified Thursday, January 16 6:30 to 9:00 pm Instructor: Lynne Damianos Location: Art Room Fee: $40 Are you frustrated in trying to use your digital camera, and the manual isn't really helpful? Learn how to take photographs easily during this hands-on workshop. Topics include camera use and settings, minimizing shutter lag, optimizing image quality, zoom, flash & exposure compensation, and white balance. Read your camera manual beforehand and bring it with you along with your camera and fresh batteries. This

workshop is suitable for point-and-shoot or beginning SLR camera users. A handout will be provided. Digital Photography Beyond the Basics Saturdays, January 18 – February 1 1:00 to 3:30 pm Instructor: Lynne Damianos Location: Art Room Fee: $120 This three-session course is suitable for SLR camera and point-and-shoot (camera must have aperture and shutter priority modes) users who have a basic understanding of the menus and buttons on their camera and want to be more creative. Topics include depth of field, aperture priority, shutter priority and manual settings, understanding scene modes, composition, light modification and what to put in your gear bag. Bring your camera and manual to each class. There will be a photography assignment each week to do on your own that will be used as a learning tool in the following class. Email two of your photos (good or with issues) in JPEG format (up to 15 MB total per email) to [email protected] two days before class starts with the subject line “HCABB_HW1_YourLastName” (or bring them in to class in a separate folder on a thumb drive or your camera’s flash card). Intro to W atercolors Tuesdays, December 3 – February 4 7:00 – 8:30 pm Instructor: Kris Waldman Location: Art Room Fee: $180 A non-intimidating, relaxing class where students will learn how to explore watercolors unique transparent properties, mix colors, layer and create depth of field

while listening to soft music. You will gain an understanding of light and depth, brush techniques, and work in various canvas sizes. References include photographs, paintings, still life and outside observation. This class meets 8 times; no class December 24 & 31. Oil Paint (W ater Soluble) Fridays, January 10 – 31 2:30 – 4:30 pm Instructor: Cindy Plutnicki Location: Art Room Fee: $120 Water-Soluble Oil Paint is a modern variety of oil paint engineered to be thinned and cleaned up with water, thus making it possible to avoid using chemicals such as turpentine. In this class, you will explore oil painting with Cindy, an oil painter for over thirty-five years. In this fun and flexible class you will learn the basic techniques of oil painting. Class is oriented for beginner to advanced students. (All supplies included). At the end of this course, students will have learned: fundamentals of drawing, including

perspective and values; oil techniques; the color wheel & color mixing; oil application; and composition. This class meets 4 times. Photographic Composition Tuesdays, January 7 – 14 6:30 to 9:00 pm Instructor: Lynne Damianos Location: Art Room Fee: $75 What makes a great photograph? Learn to make better composition decisions in camera regarding subject placement, pattern and line. We will examine tools such as the rule of thirds, focal length, depth of field, framing and camera angle to improve your photographic vision. There will be a photography assignment to do on your own that will be used as a learning tool in the following class. A handout will be provided. Pastel Drawing I Wednesdays, January 8 – 29 10:00 am to 12:00 pm Instructor: Cindy Plutnicki Location: Art Room Fee: $120 For the beginning pastel artist, this 4-week class will provide lots of individual attention to hone in on your artistic skill using the very versatile medium of pastel. Students will work from provided still life or from their own photos or objects of inspiration. At the end of this course, students will have learned composition, pastel application, and the many techniques that can be used to make a beautiful painting. Pastel is a great medium to work with for people who prefer immediate results. Students are encouraged to bring their own pastels, pastel paper along with a drawing board and an idea of what they would like to work on. This class meets 4 times.

> Register Here < Funky Turkey Sculptures: For grades 1-6 Saturdays, November 9 & 16 1:00 – 4:00 pm Instructor: Robin Batchelder Location: Art Room Fee: $75 Just in time for Thanksgiving! Students will use a variety of materials to create a funky turkey sculpture.

The sculptures will stand on their own 2 feet, and make great centerpieces for your Thanksgiving setting. In addition to fun and the resulting artwork, students will walk away with a great memento and holiday conversation piece for years to come!

M aking Com ics! For grades 4-8 Saturday, November 16 2:00 to 5:00 pm Instructor: Chris Watkins Location: Art Room Fee: $45 Comic books, manga, and comic strips are all about telling stories with words and pictures. Get a crash course in inventing fun characters, how comic panels work, and the tricks you can play with them. We’ll learn about how to spin an exciting tale and the basics of drawing people, monsters, heroes and villains with simple shapes and lines, and you’ll make a mini-comic of your own! Holiday Gift-M aking: For grades 1-6 Saturdays, November 23, December 7 & 21 1:00 to 4:00 pm Instructor: Robin Batchelder Location: Art Room Fee: $100 In this holiday-themed workshop, your young artists will choose from 8 different gift ideas and ultimately take home four handmade-and-wrapped gifts. On top of being able to get creative and have fun in a handson art workshop, students experience the joy of giving while parents have a few extra hours during the busy holiday season! Potential projects include snowmen statues, ornaments, snow globes, and more! M aking Com ics! For grades 9-12 Saturday, November 30 2:00 to 5:00 pm Instructor: Chris Watkins Location: Art Room Fee: $45 Comic strips, manga, comic books, webcomics-they’re all about telling stories with words and pictures. Get a crash course in how to craft a comic by making a mini-comic of your own. Learn about panel and page composition, drawing dynamic figures and environments, and the magic that happens between the gutters. We’ll also cover storytelling basics like inventing great characters, writing for the word

balloon, and making cliffhangers that excite and jokes that zing. Photo Field Trip to Tower Hill Saturday, January 11 9:30 am to 12:00 pm Instructor: Lynne Damianos Location: Tower Hill Botanic Garden Fee: $30 + admission fee Join us at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA, where you will have the opportunity to photograph beautiful gardens, both indoors and out, while learning how to better use your camera. We will “photograph around a subject” to depict it in varying ways and experiment with using different focal lengths to alter the look of the subject and background. Macro (close-up) photography, white balance, and exposure composition settings will be covered as well. You will have plenty of time to photograph on your own, plus have guidance from the instructor. Suitable for photographers of all levels, however, a basic understanding of your camera is required. Read your camera manual beforehand and bring it with you along with your camera and fresh batteries. Meet in the lobby at Tower Hill. We will go RAIN or SHINE, as there is plenty to see indoors!
