A Message from the President Annual reports always provide an opportunity for careful analysis of the activities carried out by an institution. In our case, this report allows us to recall and recognize the wide range of activities and services the Alumni Association offers all alumni who wish to keep in contact with their school. I am sure that, once you have read it, you will agree with me that the spirit that moved the first IESE alumni to found the association in 1959 has been kept alive with the same vitality this year. Furthermore, year after year, thanks to everyone’s efforts and support, it is flexible enough to adapt to the new needs of our increasingly international community. Over the past academic year, the Alumni Association has continued to sustain intense and growing activity in several areas, including continuing education, career development support for alumni and access to IESE research. All our initiatives and activities have received support from members of the IESE staff, who have remained close to us on a personal level and as an institution. For our part, as alumni, we have also continued to enthusiastically support IESE’s work throughout the world by contributing to its activities and projects, spreading its name and recommending its programs. I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank you on behalf of IESE for your constant support and to urge you once again to keep it up, because sharing IESE’s mission and supporting its advancement means working for better companies and a fairer society. I hope reading these pages will have the same effect on you as it has on me: to fill you with pride and help you discover new opportunities to get involved.

THE IESE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The IESE Alumni Association works to strengthen ties between the 38,000 IESE alumni and IESE, and among the 38,000 alumni themselves. It was created at the end of the first senior management program in 1959 as proof of the satisfaction and appreciation of the first IESE graduating class. Those first executives decided to find a way to maintain close ties with their school and professors and, at the same time, to continue their education and their unconditional support of their newly established school. In 53 years, the association has grown alongside IESE and passed on the enthusiasm of those first students to subsequent graduating classes, who have not hesitated to carry on the torch. Today, the association is a living testament to IESE’s diversity all over the world. The IESE Alumni Association constitutes one of the most integrated academic and business communities in the world and maintains one of the highest membership rates in the sector.
MISSION The mission of the Alumni Association is to bring together alumni who seek to maintain ties with IESE, promote continuous education activities and encourage collaboration among alumni and with IESE.
AIMS The association’s aims are to: • Promote and develop continuous education for alumni throughout the world. • Preserve and foster professional and social relationships among IESE alumni. • Support IESE in its task of helping companies serve people and society by furthering its educational goals and promoting management research and instruction. • Increase awareness of IESE and its activities.

CONTINUOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM The Continuous Education program ensures that IESE alumni receive continuous education and remain in contact with their professors. In short, it gives them access to the latest management research trends, along with the school’s humanistic vision and social values. During the 2010-2011 academic year, the Continuous Education program continued its high level of activity and participation. There was remarkable growth in attendance of sessions held outside the Barcelona and Madrid campuses: a 25 percent increase in participation compared to the previous year. This year, over 70 professors on the faculty taught at least one session, which demonstrates the wide range of topics that are appreciated and the strong commitment of the faculty to the continuous education of alumni. It is also worth highlighting that the Continuous Education program has extended its presence to a
6

wide range of countries to serve an increasingly international community thanks to the initiative and continued support of the regional chapters. Making sessions available as e-Conferences is becoming increasingly important as a way to promote quality continuous education in any corner of the world. This academic year, 1,169 users accessed sessions a total of 8,105 times. The collaboration of alumni and their companies by means of sponsorships is undoubtedly one of the main reasons it has been possible to increase the number of sessions held off campus. This collaboration has led to significant savings, thus allowing the number of sessions to be multiplied. The association would like to thank the alumni who have provided facilities and to invite them to continue promoting IESE’s international presence.

WORKSHOPS During the 2010-2011 academic year, the association organized five large workshops in Barcelona and Madrid: • Family Businesses: The Family Protocol • Career Development • Entrepreneurs • Ethics and Corporate Responsibility • Key Elements of Society: Work and Pensions Furthermore, numerous special sessions were held to address the main problems and challenges that define business and economics today. They included the following:
TIMELY AND ONGOING ANALYSIS OF THE ECONOMIC SITUATION Professors from the Department of Economics gave several sessions throughout the year to analyze the evolution of the international economy. They included: • December 9. Barcelona. The Economic Situation in Spain. Profs. Á. Argandoña, A. Subirà and P. Videla. • December 15. Madrid. Facing the Recession: A Spanish and International Overview. Profs. J. Díaz-Giménez and J. J. Toribio. “REFLECTIONS ON BUSINESS BEFORE THE CRISIS: 50 KEYS FOR IMPROVEMENT” Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid, Santiago de Compostela, Seville and Zaragoza Based on the macroeconomic situation, Professor Chiesa gave a session on the different business strategies that managers and business people can adopt to achieve improvements that will allow their companies to better compete in the turbulent markets that surround us. “Effective Management of Professional Networks” Barcelona, Washington, New York and Munich Professor Marta Elvira analyzed the nature of professional networks and the role they play in promoting effective leadership, better examining our own networks and learning to leverage them better, with an eye to future development. The professor highlighted that it can be very useful to look at society as a social network rather than a collection of individuals. She also encouraged participants to take stock of their social capital and shared some practical exercises to help them better understand and leverage their professional networks. “THE IMPACT OF WEB 2.0 ON THE COMPANY” Zaragoza, Moscow, Andorra and Palma de Mallorca At this session, Professor Sandra Sieber analyzed a series of cases of

businesses that have adopted Web 2.0 tools to connect people in various ways, establish new ways to serve the market or open new paths for innovation. She also presented the results of a global study of over 100 companies in 20 countries that indicates that the business world is still in the initial stages of wide-scale adoption of these tools. Along the way, she identified the principal challenges for effectively integrating these new technologies into companies. “ENTREPRENEURSHIP LATER IN LIFE: STARTING, BUYING OR INVESTING” Barcelona, October 1 Professor Roure explained how one can be an entrepreneur later in life by sharing the success stories of Ricardo Fisas, the founder of Natura Bissé; Enrique Quemada, the CEO of ONEtoONE Capital Partners; and Luis Malagarriga, the chairman of Kubi Wireless. “BUT IS THERE FUNDING FOR MY COMPANY?” Madrid, November 22 Jorge Soley, a senior lecturer in financial management at IESE, analyzed how small and medium-sized enterprises can find funding in the current economic climate. Professor Soley invited business people to supply companies with “some minimum resources” so they can avoid taking on excessive credit risk, especially in the area of small businesses. “The era of leverage has ended,” he said. “INVESTMENT IN LATIN AMERICA” New York, December 1 Over one hundred alumni and guests attended the Continuous Education session “Growth and Investment Opportunities: Latin America and the United States, Side by Side,” which was held at IESE’s New York Center. Presenters included Guillermo Jasson, the President of Cross Fields Capital, and professors Pedro Videla and Javier Estrada. Participants debated how the economic crisis has affected capital flows, wealth creation and investment

in emerging markets, with an emphasis on the future of investment in Latin America and the United States. “COMPANIES AND CORRUPTION” Madrid, December 4 This session analyzed the role of the company vis-à-vis corruption. Professor Domènec Melé asserted that there is a strong correlation between rigorous ethics and economic benefits for the company. One of the reasons Melé gave to justify ethical behavior is the future value of the company. “This often means having to forgo opportunistic behavior that would lead to better results,” he said. Pedro Montoya, the Group Chief Compliance Officer at EADS, was also a speaker at the session.
“The World in 2011” Madrid, January 18 For the second consecutive year, Daniel Franklin, the editor of the well-known annual report made by The Economist titled “The World in 2011,” analyzed the trends of 2011. In Franklin’s view, the year was a tale of two economies: a rich world struggling with weak recovery and no job growth, and an emerging world growing four times faster.
companies. During the session, Canals spoke on topics such as the identity crisis and lack of objectives that companies are experiencing today, taken from his recent book Building Respected Companies. For his part, Franz Haniel shared his experiences with alumni, as well as the challenges involved in operating in emerging markets such as Eastern Europe and China.
“BUILDING RESPECTED COMPANIES” Munich, March 1 Jordi Canals, the Dean of IESE, and Franz Haniel, the Chairman of the Board of Haniel Holding, offered over 100 alumni in Munich some ideas on how to build quality, respected
“BUILDING THE COMPANY OF 2020” Barcelona, March 11 The company of 2020 requires a much more flexible model than the one currently in place, based on the knowledge economy and strong brand commitment, although without

“How New Media is Changing Media Companies... And Other Companies” Barcelona, March 4 This special session analyzed how new media are changing companies and how they are affecting the most influential ones. The session was held in roundtable format and divided into two panels. The first, which focused on new media and entertainment, was led by Bill Baker, President Emeritus at Channel Thirteen in New York and a member of IESE’s International Advisory Board, who analyzed the current state of the media industry. The second session was led by Jay Ireland, the President and CEO of GE Asset Management; Tom Kane, former President of CBS Stations; Edward T. Reilly, the President and CEO of the American Management Association; and Tom Rogers, the President and CEO of TiVo. The panelists were all cautiously optimistic about the economic recovery of the United States. “I think we’re at a point that could be described as the eye of a very large hurricane,” said Reilly, who noted the improvement of economic indicators.
overlooking the fundamental role of industry, which will nonetheless change as well. This special Continuous Education session was led by Víctor Grifols, the President of Laboratorios Grifols; Julio Rodríguez (PDG ’97), the President of Schneider Europe; Javier Robles (PDG ’90), the President of Danone Spain; and Andreu Mas-Colell, the Catalan Minister of the Economy, accompanied by professors Antonio Argandoña, Núria Mas, Alfredo Pastor and Pedro Nueno. “LEADERSHIP: AN INTERNAL JOURNEY” Madrid, March 24 Professor Santiago Álvarez de Mon dedicated this session to reflecting on the concept of leadership and made a distinction between formal power and personal authority. Leadership is the ability to influence the behavior and

Loughney (Abertis), José Ignacio González-Aller (Codespa) and Manuel Almirall (Fundació Futur) put forth different approaches to relations and defended their arguments with specific examples.
“RELATIONS BETWEEN COMPANIES AND NGOs” Barcelona, March 24 The “la Caixa” Chair of Corporate Social Responsibility organized a roundtable discussion on “Relations between Companies and NGOs: Conflict, Cooperation or New Role Assignments?” In the words of the moderator, Professor Antonio Argandoña, the invited guests came from a company with a social vocation, a foundation dedicated to social promotion and a foundation that must function as a company. Against this attractive backdrop, Sergio
“Relational Leadership” Cologne, May 3 Professor Alberto Ribera analyzed the different aspects of interpersonal relations and some considerations about self-knowledge that should be taken into account to develop good leadership. The professor warned about the habit of “automatic thought” that can distort perceptions of reality and personal relationships at work. Generalization, prejudice and prematurely worrying about others’ reactions are some common traps that can be obstacles to leadership capacity. To overcome them,

it is necessary to intentionally and in a sustained manner develop positive thoughts about others that get rid of this tendency toward negative judgment. “COLLECTIVE BARGAINING REFORM” Madrid, May 17 Labor reform has also been the topic of several Continuous Education sessions. On May 17, Professor Sandalio Gómez invited Juan Antonio Sagardoy, the honorary president of Sagardoy Abogados. The professor reminded participants that the basics of collective bargaining include adapting the content to the company, wage increases linked to productivity, internal flexibility and reduction of absenteeism. For his part, Sagardoy indicated that wage increases must be linked to productivity rather than inflation, since increasing wages based on inflation alone is not a good
measure. In conclusion, he proposed a series of measures to improve collective agreements, including decentralization of sectorial, national and provincial agreements as opposed to private company agreements; making agreements flexible; and linking wage increases to productivity. “TOWARDS COMPANY 2.0: TRENDS IN COMMUNICATION AND CORPORATE COLLABORATION” São Paulo, May 25 Professor Josep Valor analyzed some of the uncertainties surrounding Company 2.0: How does using social networks affect employees productivity? Did you know that when employees are allowed to access social networks during work hours they are more productive? What is your company’s policy on the use of networks? Are there clear guidelines? Is it
true that it doesn’t cost anything to have a presence on social networks? Are they the best option for gaining visibility? “COCA-COLA: 125 YEARS OF SHARING HAPPINESS” Atlanta, July 7 IESE alumni participated in a special gathering at Coca-Cola’s emblematic headquarters the year that the popular beverage turned 125 years old. The event was organized by Cristina Bondolowski (PDD ’03), the Senior Global Manager of the Coca-Cola Company, who gave the session “Coca-Cola: 125 Years of Sharing Happiness.” Other participants included Professor Pinar Ozcan and Ted Ryan, the manager of Coca-Cola Archives

In Madrid, the welcome was given by Monika Borgers, the Director of Alumni in Madrid. In the sessions that followed, Professor DíazGiménez analyzed the current state of the economy and Professor Santiago Álvarez de Mon gave a session dedicated to leadership in uncertain times.
CLASS MEETINGS The IESE Alumni Association offers advising services to the representatives of each graduating class so they can organize reunions with their classmates. During the 2010-2011 academic year, a total of 48 reunions were held on the Barcelona and Madrid campuses and drew 2,919 attendees from 190 graduating classes. The Alumni Division has also helped organize 35 other initiatives held by different classes outside the IESE facilities.

Global Alumni reunion GLOBAL ALUMNI REUNION 2010: BARCELONA Over 2,614 IESE alumni from 55 countries participated in the Global Alumni Reunion on October 28 and 29 in Barcelona. The event was opened by IESE professor José Manuel Campa, the Spanish Secretary of State for Economic Affairs, who met with alumni at Les Drassanes Reials in Barcelona. He was accompanied by Jordi Canals, the Dean of IESE, and Jordi Hereu, the Mayor of Barcelona. The following day, academic sessions were held at the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya in Barcelona. Alumni were welcomed by Canals; Mireia Rius, the Director of the Alumni Association; Antonio González-Adalid, the President of the Alumni Association; and professors Jaume Ribera and Antonio Dávila, the Academic Directors.
THANK YOU, ENTREPRENEURS During his talk, Professor Jordi Canals highlighted the role of entrepreneurs. He said, “This is a time for entrepreneurs. Keep on with your work, because the world needs you.” The professor gave an overview of IESE’s projects during the year and reminded alumni that “we must continue training better people, better companies and, as a result, a better society. IESE is building bridges between cultures, which is very important in today’s world.” Professor Núria Mas introduced Peter Orszag, a former economic advisor to Barack Obama and the former Director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. IESE professor Marta Elvira introduced a panel of business people who had demonstrated their ability to compete globally. Marc Puig, the CEO of Puig, said that, in the last five years, his company has been able to increase its market share in Europe and the United States considerably thanks to fragrances linked to famous designers such as Carolina Herrera, Paco Rabanne and Nina Ricci. “We see ourselves as brand builders through fashion. We don’t just sell products; we sell experiences. You need to engage customers in their values and their value system,” he said. Charles Petruccelli, the President of Global Travel Services at American Express, pointed out that the travel industry has been hit hard by the recession, but also by the H1N1 pandemic and the eruption of the volcano in Iceland. With these setbacks, volume has
18
Annual Report 2010-2011
dropped by 20 to 30 percent and many companies have reduced their travel expenditures by up to 70 percent. Thus, said Petruccelli, “We have changed our model. We have optimized our spend with global solutions both off line and on line. The new model allows us to develop new solutions across the board. It is way beyond the original business of issuing an air ticket on time with a smile.” Travel companies have had to quickly and radically adapt to the Internet and now they face the new challenge of expanding
their business to mobile phones. “People hold in their hands the ability to get information, make a decision and execute it,” he said. He added that data privacy is becoming a critical question: a company that cannot guarantee that it protects its customers’ privacy “faces the threat of extinction.” Lastly, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, a member of the Board of Directors of Gamesa and former European Commissioner for External Relations, commented on the importance of greater integration
so that the European Union has real weight in the international geopolitical sphere. FerreroWaldner had the foresight to insist that the European Union must speed up its decision making: ideally, it should become a federation and have a single President and a single Minister of External Relations. Otherwise, it will lose influence in the world.

EMERGING MARKETS
NEW PARADIGM SHIFTS
SUCCESS THROUGH INNOVATION
The next session, “New Business Models in Emerging Countries” was moderated by Professor Pedro Nueno, who asked speakers from Brazil, India and China about development in their countries. Vinay Kothari (MBA ’92), a partner and investor in Khemchand & Kothari in Bombay, said that countries like India and China would probably soon become hubs of innovation and development. Furthermore, bureaucracy has been reduced, the economy has been liberalized and they are opening up to foreign investment and joint ventures.
The last morning session, “New Strategy Paradigms,” was moderated by Professor Antonio Dávila. Esko Aho, the Executive Vice President of Corporate Relations at Nokia, said that Europe needs a clear strategy that takes the long term into account and helps us after the crisis. He said, “We run the risk of eating the seed potatoes rather than sowing them.”
In a session moderated by Professor Sandra Sieber, Pascal Cagni, the General Manager and Vice President for Europe, Middle East, India and Africa (EMEIA) at Apple, discussed how his company rebounded from a very precarious situation ten years ago, when its founder came back and took the reins of the company. “One of the things that Steve Jobs did was to bring back a sense of purpose,” said Cagni. Apple focused its efforts on driving mobility and investing in innovation, and since then the company has experienced exponential growth with the introduction of industry-changing products such as the iPod, iPhone and, most recently, the iPad.
With regard to China, Eric X. Li, the founder and Managing Director of Chengwei Ventures, said that there were many opportunities in his country, especially for online businesses. “Three years ago, I started a TV and Internet company with $500,000 and it is now the biggest in China. It has 3.5 million customers and is second only to YouTube,” he explained. He also added that his country is open to European wind and solar technology companies because European technology is more advanced. But he warned that “China is a very difficult country to export to unless you have a hard competitive edge, whether it is a product or services.” Mauro Ribeiro Viegas Filho (AMP-Brazil ’07), the President of Concremat Engenharia e Technologia, said that Brazil was growing very rapidly and that the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games would boost its growth even more. According to Ribeiro, foreign investors can find opportunities, especially in the private sector, since there is a lot of bureaucracy to deal with in the public sector.

Annual Report 2010-2011
Hermann Simon, the Chairman of marketing and strategy firm Simon-Kucher & Partners, said that China will be the world’s factory and Europe must build it. He added that companies that are not already in China have a problem and advocated looking at the whole world as the playing field. Francesc Belil, the CEO of Siemens Southwest Europe, said that the quality of European universities is unacceptable and we must make Europe the continent of education for all. “Europe must continue to be a leader in innovation and quality education is essential to achieve that.”
“I’m grateful to IESE for holding such a special event that combines the academic element with an opportunity to reconnect with classmates and compare our careers and experiences.” Jorge Sendagorta (PADE ´90)

MODELS OF INTERNATIONAL EXPANSION Professor Jaume Ribera spoke with three business leaders from the fashion, energy, and airline industries, who offered their views on expansion in times of economic difficulty. Isak Andic, the founder and CEO of Mango, who is also on IESE’s International Advisory Board, spoke about his company’s international growth and pointed out that it currently has a presence in 105 countries and seeks to continue expanding. Rafael Villaseca (MBA ’76), the CEO of Gas Natural FENOSA, described his company’s background and how it has used geographic and cultural connections with Latin America to grow. “Energy is one of the fastestdeveloping markets in the world and will continue to grow in the near future,” he stressed. Baroness Denise Kingsmill, Labor Peer in the House of Lords in the United Kingdom and a member of the administrative board at British Airways, discussed the overall economic picture, as well as the recent merger of British Airways and Iberia. In the final session, moderated by Professor Antonio Argandoña, José Viñals, the Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and IESE professor Juan José Toribio analyzed the international economic situation.

IESE PROFESSORS’ BLOGS AND SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS The Alumni Association also disseminates news and content through social networks. Particularly notable are the closed group for IESE alumni on LinkedIn (over 7,500 members), the Facebook page (over 3,000 likes) and the Twitter feed (over 1,800 followers). The Alumni Association Twitter feed has developed a list that follows all alumni who wish to be followed, a feature which is turning out to be very useful for sharing information and content. Some groups of alumni who have “met” though social networks are carrying out initiatives around IESE such as entrepreneur meetings and other get-togethers of a more social nature. Alumni can also stay up to date on the latest IESE research blogs through official channels. Lastly, alumni can subscribe to and access IESE professors’ blogs through the IESE blogosphere.

OtHER MAJOR PROJECTS One of the chief goals of the association is to ensure that an effective, permanent training service is available to IESE alumni and that it is regularly adjusted to the real needs of this community. With this aim in mind, several different projects were designed and implemented this academic year to enrich and adapt the services traditionally provided on the Barcelona and Madrid campuses to the increasingly more international profile of alumni. This also made it possible to achieve another association goal: to support the international development of IESE, one of the school’s strategic areas. The aim of including new, improved alumni services is to support the high membership rate, which is one of the highest among international business schools.
TRAINING AND KNOWLEDGE Knowing that their continuous training is guaranteed may be what motivates alumni the most to become members of the association (see Chapter 2: Continuous Education Programs). Extraordinary Sessions on Current Affairs The Strategic Plan proposed improving the quantity and quality of the Continuous Education sessions by increasing the number of extraordinary sessions on current affairs to expose alumni to the leading topics of the day. In the last three years, the number of extraordinary sessions increased by 30 percent. Some of the sessions of interest were “Building the Company of 2020,” “The World in 2011,” with editor Daniel Franklin, and “How New Media is Changing Media Companies... and Other Companies,” which included the participation of the members of the IESE USA Council. Internationalization The presence of the Continuous Education program was increased in geographic areas that are strategic to IESE because the number of alumni has shown sustained growth: Germany, Brazil, the United States and the United Kingdom. The association participated in more than 20 world events to support the international development of the IESE brand. Of special note was the organization of a breakfast series in New York City with the collaboration of The Wall Street Journal and BCG. Some of the important entrepreneurs and managers attending were Sir Howard Stringer, the President and CEO of Sony, and Ken Frazier, the CEO of Merck.

E-Conferences. The Strategic Plan also includes making an effort to break down the barriers of time and space through technology by offering all alumni the chance to access quality training material on line, such as conferences, Continuous Education sessions and podcast interviews. The quality and quantity of the virtual content was optimized in the academic year through the introduction of new display devices (Mac, iPad and iPhone,

CAREER DEVELOPMENT With the collaboration of the Department of Managing People in Organizations and the Career Development Support Committee (which is made up of members with expertise in this area who share their recommendations and knowledge), the Alumni Association has consolidated the career development services for alumni.
SUCEED
WORKSHOPS
The star service in this section is SUCCEED, a platform that allows IESE members to review and plan their professional and personal futures by focusing on training in seven stages. The stages are not meant to be followed chronologically. Users may do them in any order and focus only on what interests them.
This academic year, 17 workshops were organized on the Barcelona and Madrid campuses. The aim of these workshops is to help alumni manage all the possibilities offered by the platform more effectively.
The platform is now one of the services that receives the most visitors on the alumni portal. Career development support services are among the most requested by association members and the new section on career development has strengthened these services. The platform allows members to access training tools that can help them continue developing as leaders using a more personalized approach. The platform structures the learning process in seven different stages: • Self-assessment, Autoconocimiento • Understanding the market, Entender el mercado • Choosing your options, Escoger entre las diferentes opciones • Creating your brand, Creando la marca • Executing your action plan, Ejecutar el plan de acción • Evaluating your opportunities, Evaluar tus oportunidades • Developing your future, career plan. The association led a series of workshops to improve personalized counseling on career development for alumni.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Alumni Association has a database of career opportunities exclusively aimed at IESE members. Under “Career Opportunities,” members can perform customized searches by sector, area, salary range, location, etc. The system also lets them save their preferences for future reference. In academic year 2010-2011, the quality and quantity of job offers increased by 23 percent compared to the previous year. Moreover, the association has implemented a strategic plan to improve monitoring of offers and the functions of the placement service.
Other major projects
EVENTS AND SEMINARS To provide support for career development services, Career Development workshops were held during the academic year. They were organized as special sessions of the Continuous Education Program (see chapter on Continuous Education). IESE offers a series of programs focusing on leadership and career and personal development, including the following: • Developing Leadership Competencies. • Coaching directivo: desarrollando el talento en la organización. Members enjoy a 10 percent discount on these programs.
DATA-UPDATE CAMPAIGN Keeping updated information on alumni and members is one of the cornerstones of the association. A data-update campaign that included a drawing for ten iPads was organized to encourage alumni to update their personal and professional details. This campaign made it possible to update 9,000 records.
PROFESSIONAL CONSULTATIONS With the aim of supporting members who want to develop their management skills, perform searches in their areas of professional improvement and explore paths for personal growth, exclusive online programs have been added to the alumni portal, as well as the possibility of obtaining support in person through meetings with IESE professors in the Department of Managing People in Organizations.
The winners of the iPads were: José Masana Tardá (PDD-I ‘75), Ignacio de la Rica Aranguren (MBA ‘83), Evelio Puig Romagosa (MBA ‘83), José Luis Sánchez-Ramos Huélamo (PDD-B ‘2011), Luis López Ozcári (PDG-III ‘88), Ana Cerqueda (PDD ‘10), Kurt Dollhofer (AMP Munich ‘05), Eudivigis Ortiz (PDG ‘09), Jose María Julià Vich (PDD ‘89) and Carlos Proano (MBA ‘09).

MEMBERSHIP AND LOYALTY For alumni, becoming a member of the association means making a solid commitment to their own personal and professional development. It is also an indication of support and loyalty toward IESE.
GLOBALIZAtioN
MEMBERSHIP
As the proportion of international students participating in the school’s programs increases, the profile of IESE alumni is becoming more and more diverse, and this makes the association increasingly more global.
The Alumni Division implemented a campaign with specific information for alumni who finish their programs with the aim of giving them a clearer idea of the value of the services offered by the Alumni Association.
See page 29 for a clear picture of the incredible diversity of alumni in the regional chapters.
In academic year 2010-2011, a total of 1,907 students graduated and 81.1 percent of them were members of the association before they finished the program.
With 5,719 alumni from 109 countries, the community outside Spain now represents 16 percent of the total and showed 12-month growth of 20.7 percent, as outlined in the table of alumni by regional chapter. In academic year 2010-2011, the association’s projects were organized in two areas: membership and loyalty.

FINANCIAL REPORT The association’s resources are managed in accordance with the criteria and objectives presented to the Executive Committee, the association’s executive body. The association’s results are indicated in its report and are formally approved each year by the Governing Board, represented by the Presidents and Secretaries of the classes that have completed a program at IESE and the Vice Presidents of the association’s regional chapters. During academic year 2010-2011, income from membership fees increased by 4 percent thanks to the increase in the number of alumni, despite the turbulent economic situation. The drop in revenue from sponsorships was due to the fact that some companies provided in-kind support. Under expenses, the Continuous Education Program continued to account for the largest part of the budget. This academic year showed a 14 percent increase compared to the previous year due to an increase in activity outside Spain. The Executive Committee decided that, starting in academic year 2009-2010, 100 percent of teaching expenses would be charged to the items Continuous Education and International Continuous Education. Moreover, the expenses derived from Regional Chapters increased due to the organization of Regional Meetings in Navarra, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Aragon, Levante, Galicia and the Balearic Islands.

Annual Report 2010-2011
The fact that the IESE Global Alumni Reunion was held in Spain resulted in a 30 percent drop in expenses compared to the previous year and brought the expense back to the levels experienced when the reunion is held in Spain.
Finally, the MBA Reunion, which is held every two years, absorbed part of the cost of class meetings, which explains the drop of 24 percent compared to the previous year.

THE ASSOCIATION DRIVES IESE PROJECTS The Alumni Association provides a structure and channels collaboration between alumni and IESE in basic areas such as training for new teachers, funding for scholarships and research promotion. Through these and other initiatives, alumni have helped position IESE among the leading business schools in the world. As in previous years, the Executive Committee proposes how any surplus should be allocated and the decision is then ratified by the Governing Board. For the 20102011 academic year, surplus was allocated as shown in the financial report.
SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS IN MBA PROGRAM As a reflection of the association’s commitment to the academic preparation of young entrepreneurs and managers, scholarships are awarded each year to MBA candidates from around the world with top academic and professional track records. These scholarships cover 50 percent of the tuition fees for the first and second years of the program. A total of 165,000 euros was awarded this year in scholarships.

Annual Report 2010-2011
RESEARCH PROJECTS Twenty-seven percent of the association’s surplus was earmarked to finance some of IESE’s research projects. Annex 3: Faculty Publications / Generating New Ideas, contains a list of the books and articles published in the most renowned international academic journals last academic year.
FACULTY DEVELOPMENT The association sets aside the largest portion of its surplus (53 percent) to training young teachers, a task it understands to be one of the basic structures for supporting IESE’s teaching and research work. See Annex 4: Faculty Development, for detailed information on the new teachers who have joined the IESE faculty in the last three years.
RESEARCH EXCELLENCE AWARDS In order to support the research work of IESE professors and recognize the work done by the school’s faculty, the association created the Research Excellence Awards in 2002. The jury is made up of representatives from the Executive Committee and IESE faculty members. In the 2010-2011 edition, the jury members included Executive Committee representatives Antonio González-Adalid, Alejandro Beltrán and Antoni Esteve, and IESE faculty members Fernando Peñalva and Julián Villanueva. This year’s award winners were: • Víctor Martínez de Albéniz, for his article “Competition in the Supply Option Market,” published in a specialized journal. • Domènec Melé, for his book, Business Ethics in Action: Seeking Human Excellence in Organizations. • Fernando Pereira, for his book, Contabilidad para dirección [Accounting for Managers]. • José Antonio Segarra, for the course, Dirección de la pequeña y mediana empresa [Management of Small and Medium-Sized Companies].
IESE Alumni Association

Government of the Association The association’s governance structure consists of an Executive Committee and a Governing Board, whose job is to vigorously defend the interests of alumni. The Executive Committee is the association’s executive body. Its work is carried out by individual committees covering all the areas in which the association is active. It is also responsible for approving the association’s budget and presenting its annual financial statements to the Governing Board. The Governing Board meets once a year to approve the annual report and settle accounts. It also accepts proposals and suggestions from the members in attendance and alumni in general. All alumni are represented on the Board by their class President and Secretary and by the President and Vice President of their Regional Chapters. To provide better service to alumni, the association is divided geographically into Regional Chapters, each of which has its own Board. The Executive Committee delegates to the Chapter Boards (See Annex 5. Regional Chapters) all the functions these boards request and which it is more appropriate for them to do to ensure the association runs effectively. Moreover, due to increased enrollment of international students in IESE programs, new Regional Chapters are being created to bring the association to more countries.
